Perhaps one day it would please you if I

were present, though my bones had already rotted in my grave.

Then you would find yourself wronged, subjected to indignity,

longing for someone like me, in need of my help.

And your friends would forsake you after I am gone, and you would be afflicted,

and the Sovereign would vindicate me against you, without your knowing.

And had I been alive before that, no one would have sought

a humiliating course for him, and you would have been consulted in the matter.

To the son of al-Julanda, master of horses, Jayfar.
