    My two friends, if one day I die, while deferred

    are your deaths among all that time defers,

    then pass by my grave, stand there, and offer greetings,

    and say: May rain and showers water you, O grave!

    مِنَ الدَهرِ وَالدُنيا لَها وَرَقٌ نَضرُ

    As though the one you concealed had never reveled for an hour

    of time, while the world had fresh green leaves;

    بَرُودٍ حَمَتهُ القَومَ رَجراجَةٌ بِكرُ

    nor had it given him of itself a sweet, delightful draught,

    cool, guarded from men by a soft-bodied virgin;

    حُمَيّا فَدَبَّت في مَفاصلِهِ الخَمرُ

    nor had he drunk in the morning on a day of heat or cold

    potent wine, so that the wine crept through his joints;

    nor startled the pale antelopes sheltering at midmorning

    in the hollows of rain-watered ground whose slopes were yellow.

    They had nibbled summer greens until it seemed

    their tongues, from nibbling its hullab plants, bore date syrup.

    Nor praised the noble, magnanimous chief, in whose palm

    are rain clouds, from whose overflow the wilderness is watered.

    He shot toward him amid the people, with the people around him,

    and a sinewy, powerful man, fierce of shoulder,

    and a bent bow whose curve two hired hands had tightened,

    binding and bending, till bending and binding were balanced.

    The fever kept eyeing him until it gained access

    to him, lofty-gated and raised high by walls.

    Then he feared, with it already lodged within his heart

    in the place of a great dignitary whom circumstance had advanced.
