Who will convey my messages to Ḥubshī,

kinsman of Banū Zulayfa, the Ṣubḥī?

Do you not see me—a black-skinned man,

    stout-legged and gap-toothed?

    Ask Hudhayl, and ask ʿAlī:

Do I not draw the keen sword of Buṣrā,

until I die, noble and faithful,

when I see our neighbor beset?

Ah, would that I knew—will his people indeed blame

Zuhayr for what he has drawn upon them from every side?

In Zuhayr’s two hands are their band from al-ʿArj,

and whoever transgresses among the two pillars, Lakhm and Ghālib.
