O woman among our neighbors, rise and greet us.

And if you give drink to noble people, give us drink.

And if you summon to a great undertaking and a noble deed

one day the leaders of the finest people, then summon us.

Our forelocks are disheveled; our cauldrons are free for the taking.

We heal with our wealth the wounds our hands have left.

We are those who feed others when a northerly wind blows,

and the finest assembly people have seen is our assembly.

If one day you race toward a goal of honor,

you will find among us the frontrunners and the runners-up.

And no chief among us ever dies

without our choosing a youth as chief among us.

    Indeed, we hold our lives cheap on the day of terror;

yet, were our lives priced in safety, our price would be high.

Indeed, we are of a people whose forebears were destroyed

by the warriors' cry: 'Ho, where are the defenders?'

If a single one of us were among a thousand, and they called,

'Who is a horseman?' he would think they meant him.

When the armored warriors draw aside lest they be struck

by the swords' edges, we meet those blades with our hands.

Nor do we see them, however great their calamity,

among the mourners, weeping over those who have died.

And sometimes we ride into hardship; then it is dispelled

from us by zeal for honor and swords that aid us.
