Ah, be well, Fatima: I will not break with you today,

nor ever, so long as your affection remains constant.

Al-Bakri's daughter shot at you from a wild lote-tree bough,

while the narrow-eyed camels bearing us seemed like ostriches.

She appeared to us on departure day with flowing hair

and a sweet mouth whose front teeth were not crowded together.

A bank of rainclouds watered it in an overhung hollow,

sheltered from the sun; pouring clouds drenched it.

At Dhat al-Dal she showed you her wrists

and a smooth, soft cheek like a piece of silver.

His heart has sobered from her, yet a memory,

whenever it comes, makes the earth spin about him as he stands.

Look closely, my friend: do you see any women in litters

who set out in haste and seated themselves in spacious litters?

They departed from the basin of al-Wari'ah after

the day had risen high, and they crossed the isolated sand dunes.

They adorned themselves with rubies, gold beads, and wrought jewelry,

and Dhofari onyx and matching pairs of pearls.

They traversed the villages and the valley bend, their camels urged on by song,

and skirted Qaww and crossed the mountain passes.

Ah, how lovely the face whose whiteness she shows us,

and cascading tresses like twisted cords, while I yearn.

And I am truly shy before Futaymah when hungry,

hollow-bellied, and shy before Futaymah when fed.

And I am truly shy before you, though a vast waste lies between us,

for fear you may encounter a stern brother of mine.

And I, even if my young she-camel tires, will surely venture

with her and myself, O Futaym, into perilous wastes.

    O Fatima, love overlooks aversion

and makes a man of noble honor endure hardships.

Ah, be well beneath the radiant star, Fatima,

even if the turns of separation have not been agreeable.

Ah, be well; then know that my need

is for you; give me some of your bounty in return, Fatima.

O Fatima, if the women were in one town,

and you in another, I would follow you, distraught with love.

Whenever a loving friend wishes, he may break with his companion

and rage at him, inevitably acting unjustly.

    فَنفْسَكَ وَلِّ اللَّوْمَ إِنْ كُنْتَ لائِما

    And Janab swore an oath, so you obeyed him;

so lay the blame on yourself, if you must blame.

As though he wore the crown of the House of Muharriq

because he harmed his ally and emerged unharmed.

    ومن يَغْوِ لا يَعْدَمْ على الغَيِّ لائِما

    So whoever meets with good, people praise his conduct;

and whoever goes astray will not lack someone to blame him for his error.

Have you not seen that a man cuts off his own hand

and endures grievous hardships from a friend's reproach?

Is it a dream that has left you scratching the ground in silent gloom?

And dreams may indeed beset one who sleeps.

Your brother is he who, if you are left in need by a calamity

of fate, remains ever sorrowful over it.

Nor is your brother the one who, if tangled

affairs beset you, keeps reproaching you always.
