وَقَرىand offered hospitality باعِثٌBāʿith أُسيدUsayd حَرباًwar
وَقَرى باعِثٌ أُسيد حَرباً
فيin النَواحيthe regions يَشُبَّhe kindles مِنهاfrom it الضِراماthe blaze
في النَواحي يَشُبَّ مِنها الضِراما
And an instigator served Usayd a feast of war,
And Bāʿith offered Usayd war as hospitality,
From which the blaze flares across the regions.
Throughout the regions, he kindles its blaze.
جَرَّدَhe unsheathed السَيفَthe sword ثائِراًseeking vengeance بِأَخيهِfor his brother
جَرَّدَ السَيفَ ثائِراً بِأَخيهِ
يَقتُلُhe kills الكَهلَthe middle-aged man مِنهُمُamong them وَالغُلاماand the boy
يَقتُلُ الكَهلَ مِنهُمُ وَالغُلاما
He bared the sword, avenging his brother,
He unsheathed the sword, avenging his brother,
Killing the old men among them and the boys.
He slays their mature men and boys.
فَمَلَأناso we filled الدِلاءَthe buckets حَتّىup to عُراهاtheir handles
فَمَلَأنا الدِلاءَ حَتّى عُراها
عَلَقاًclotted blood بَرَّدَcooled القُلوبthe hearts السِقاماthe ailing
عَلَقاً بَرَّدَ القُلوب السِقاما
Then we filled the buckets right up to their handles
So we filled the buckets up to their handles
With clotted blood that cooled the hearts’ fever.
With clotted blood that cooled the ailing hearts.
