Will the days in which I lived in bliss return to me,
I yearn for days when I enjoyed
At al-Raqmatayn, while the people of the bān-trees had not departed?
My two friends, though others were obscure
أيامَdays when كناwe were وكانَand was الربعُthe dwelling يجمعُناgathered us
ولمand did not نقلwe say اِنناthat we كنّاwe were ولاnor كانواthey were
Days when we were together and the dwelling gathered us,
Days when we four would gather
And we never said, “We once were,” or “They once were,”
Without claims of "we" or "they"

In the delight of a union unspoiled
In the bliss of an undisturbed union
By parting or a spiteful foe spurred on by hatred.
No slanderer to arouse our scorn
فهلso, is there? معيدٌone who restores لناto us أيامَهنَّtheir days كماas

Will anyone, then, restore our days with them, as
Can anyone restore those days to me
We were by the valley bend, neither we nor they unfaithful?
As we were, true, never to betray

There is no good in a spiteful foe striving to deny me
No good is found in those who scheme
The closeness [reading uncertain] I enjoyed, while time itself was joyous.
To deny me what I treasured most

I spent its sweetest part at al-Raqmatayn, and I had
I left the best of all behind
In the dwelling and among the graceful women, desires and homes.
In that land, those camps and homes
