Whose are the traces at al-Raqmatayn and the ruins?

May a copious, pouring rain from the clouds water them.

Abodes whose traces time has effaced,

So they, and what patience I have, are tatters.

So I have no relief, now that the resident band has departed with their people,

Nor have the dwellings any cure for separation's anguish.

I stood there weeping; from my breath and from

My tears came torrents and floods upon them.

I ask them about their people; a lover

Is ever questioning the still-standing ruins of dwellings.

Once the warmth of these abodes would captivate you,

In the days of closeness, when they housed graceful women.

Yet not long, in those abodes at Wajra,

Or among its herds, did spans of union with them last.

May rain water every faded trace there, though there have passed

Over it years of days and time.

And may it water abodes whose earth grows tamarisk,

Though nearer acacias and wild lote trees stir my longing.

And a dusky one, whose frame never swayed with coquetry

And proud airs without rousing a dusky, quivering spear's envy.

From him you find delight or alarm, whenever

He withdraws or draws near: sweet closeness and departure.

For in his mouth is a vintner whose wine breathes fragrance

Sweetly just after sleep; in his eyelid is an archer.

In both states, his estrangement and his union,

I am alarmed; tell me how to cope with either.

And pale camels, vying in thinness with the reins at their nose-rings,

Worn lean by swift pacing, rapid strides, and trotting.

Night travelers—rather, ships of a trackless waste,

Which the mirage now raises, now lowers.

They stretch their necks toward the mirage's shimmer,

Deceived by the semblance of water within it.

Yet its limpid water can never quench their raging thirst,

Though wind has rippled it—blue and smoothly flowing.

When I saw the herd, its gazelles stretching upward,

And within it a fragrant woman, unadorned with jewelry,

I cast my glance toward the rose of her cheek,

And the black of her beauty mark, which left its imprint.

Ah, what a glance, gifting the heart a burning ache,

While vipers swayed from those tresses!

And at an effaced campsite, the pale camels and riders

Yearn and wail over its worn-out traces.

When we turned toward it, lying effaced,

Vanished wishes and hopes grieved us.

Longing shackled us there, and we could not

Depart: memory has its fetters and chains.

When the rain competed in their open courts

With my tears—unceasing downpour and streaming flood—

Longing ruled, of the two rains, that my tears

Were torrents, the clouds' waters mere trickles.

Oh, what shame for the clouds when they dispersed,

While my eyelid and my tears remained unchanged!

When the languid breeze blew from the protected pasture,

And predawn hours stirred your longing, late afternoons charmed you,

Its blowing bent the branches' supple sides,

As a supple-waisted, swaying figure swayed.

So greet the protected pasture for me, and those who dwell there,

With ardent love, even if they weary of my love, even if they turn away.

For they are where passions dwell; I was not turned from them

By threats or terrors, as the tale-bearers imagined.

Strange that separation should distress me

With its vicissitudes, while those people dwell in my heart.

Would that everyone, in my love for them, were

Tale-bearers and reproachers whenever they are mentioned before me.

Never has the thought of parting crossed my mind, with union close at hand,

In dread of distance, without fears assailing me.

A union in which I fear separation, even though

Limbs are severed from it by estrangement.

For my secret heart and longing's fire, whenever the east wind blows,

Kindling and preoccupation increase throughout time.

And poetry's due from me is to weave its wondrous beauty,

That gazelles may be described and love lyrics recited.

They have claimed that love's right guidance

Is error; yet, in lovers' eyes, they are the ones astray.
