أقامُ وجدي وصبري بعدهمْ رَحَلا
When the neighbors’ camel-drivers urged the camels onward,
my anguish stayed, while my patience departed after them.

I have no excuse—since their mounts have entered the lowlands
and longing has carried me to the highlands—for heeding reproach.

بالعاشقينَ إلى أن ردَّني مَثَلا
Before love, I used to hear of its cruel punishment
of lovers—until it made an example of me.

Even before the dwelling grew distant, I was ever fearful,
for in love I have always lived in fear.

by tears that pour whenever my palm would check them.

Time perishes, but their remembrance does not,
nor, while I live, do I find anyone to replace them.

a praiseworthy time, which I never cease to lavish
with praise, when my youth had nearly—or fully—reached its prime.

Gardens of delight, whose marvels we contemplated,
so they left us no desire for any others.

so I turn, asking my she-camels for a trot.

in a tunic of it that trails whenever I put it on.

When the dwelling emptied of those who had lived there,
most bitter was what nearness had once made sweet.

Patience is the fairest garment, pleasing to wear,
except in estrangement or after separation—not then.
