أبارقاً شِمتَه بالغَورِ لمّاحا

أهدَى لقلبِكَ أشجاناً وأتراحا
Was it lightning you watched flashing in the Ghawr
He twinkled his lightning in the darkness as a flirt,
that brought your heart sorrows and grief?
Bringing sorrows and sighs as gifts to your heart,
بُدَّلْتَهُyou were given it in exchange بعدَماقدafter having already كنتَyou were مغتبطاًcontent
بُدَّلْتَهُ بعدَماقد كنتَ مغتبطاً
بالقربِin nearness تصحبُyou keep company with راحاتٍcomforts وأفراحاand joys
بالقربِ تصحبُ راحاتٍ وأفراحا
It was given you in exchange, after you had been content
After making you joyful, he changed you,
in nearness, keeping company with ease and joy.
With nearness, comfort and joy accompany each other,
ماnot أنتَyou أوَّلَthe first مَنْone who أودَىbrought ruin بمهجتِهِupon his lifeblood

جِدُّthe earnestness الغرامِof love وخَالَand he thought الوجدَlonging مزّاحاa jester
جِدُّ الغرامِ وخَالَ الوجدَ مزّاحا
You are not the first whose lifeblood was destroyed
You are not the first one whose mind was corrupted by love,
by love's earnestness, while he thought longing a jester.
The essence of passion and the confidant of ecstasy jest,

Taste the pure water whose draught you found sweet
Taste the bitter cup that you found sweet out of ignorance,
in ignorance; now that it has ebbed, you are parched.
So when it was too late you found it bitter and harsh,

This is your cure: how often you answered its caller
This is your remedy, though you answered his call,
when he called you, seeking no guidance from sincere advisers.
When he called you, you did not follow advice,
ركِبتَyou rode مِنfrom وَلَهٍlovesick longing بحرَthe sea المنىof hopes غَرَراًrecklessly
ركِبتَ مِن وَلَهٍ بحرَ المنى غَرَراً
وطالماand often جمحَbolted المغرورُthe deluded man أوor طاحاfell
وطالما جمحَ المغرورُ أو طاحا
In lovesick longing you rode the sea of hopes recklessly,
Out of infatuation, you rode the sea of wishes blindly,
and often the deluded man has bolted or fallen.
And the arrogant always stumble and fall,
حتىuntil أعادكَit left you ماnot تنفكُّyou cease مِنfrom وَلَهٍlovesick longing

Until it left you ceaselessly, in lovesick longing,
Until what you cannot stop wishing returned you
cursing a gaze that strains toward the beloveds.
To blame the beloved flirtatiously,

You wander enraptured at dawn's rising, out of delight
You wander at dawn, discomforted,
brought by the coolness of the garden's fragrant breeze.
The garden's breeze greeting you coolly at daybreak,

You show delight when you inhale its fragrant breath,
You show contentment when you smell its fragrance,
as though you had shared wine with it.
As if it has relieved all your troubles,

No rain cloud whose tears I begged for through the night,
The clouds were not stingy with their tears one day,
and whose rumbling rain poured throughout the night,
Rain poured heavier than my tears on the meadows,
مُثْعَنْجِراًpouring in torrents ملأَfilled الغيطانَthe lowlands زاخِرُهits swollen flood

streaming in torrents, its swollen flood filling the lowlands,
The downpour filled the valleys abundantly,
then sinking into the earth, saturating it after flowing,
Spreading moisture in the land after wandering,

reviving plants the clouds had forsaken for a time,
Reviving plants that the clouds had diminished for a while,
as though the rain had restored souls within them,
As if the drops restored life into them,

With tears more abundant than mine, over pastures
whose dwellings rain-laden clouds had effaced.

You rush if the darkness of night spreads
its flanks coarse haircloths of deepest gloom.
Its robes of deep darkness like crocodiles,

And if the rain clouds' lightning flashes, it rouses me,
And if the flash of lightning rouses me,
when it appears like a sword blade or gleams.
Appearing like an unsheathed sword or gleaming,

It sways erect between the clouds’ bracelets,
brilliant, radiant, plainly shining for night travelers.
More beautiful and brighter than torches,

والدمعُ ما زالَ للمشتاقِ فضّاحا
I watch it, and tears escape from burning anguish;
I perceive its fragrance and tears pour out ardently,
and tears have always betrayed the yearning lover.
For the longing, tears always reveal,

The cooing dove kindles my passion as it perches,
The streams' murmur awakens my passion when pausing,
singing aloud from longing upon the branches.
With yearning, moaning from the branches,

Then I turn to the blaze of longing in my liver,
So the flames of ardent love bend me,
gushing tears to sprinkle upon longing's fire.
My streaming tears feeding the fires of passion,

غنَّى الحمامُ على الباناتِ أو ناحا
I weep, not knowing, from sorrow and lovesick longing,
I cry but do not know whether from sorrow or craze,
whether the doves upon the bān trees sang or mourned.
The doves cooed to the maidens or lamented,
وأسترُand I conceal الوجدَlonging والتَّذكارُand remembrance يَفْضَحُهُexposes it

And I conceal longing, while remembrance exposes it,
And ecstasy exposes my love when the scent of flowers wafts,
when the laurel's scent wafts or spreads.
If the fragrance of perfume spreads or airs,

أيامَ كنتُ لعَرْفِ الوصلِ مُمتاحا
The fragrance of its gust recalls Salma's necklaces,
Its sweet aroma tells the story of Salma's necklaces,
in the days when I drew from the fragrance of union.
When I had access to the fragrance of union,

I would travel to her by night, my eyes at peace, smiling,
I would walk to her with a twinkling eye, smiling,
and return delighted by the sweet saliva of her mouth.
And incline, pleased, from the stimulation of the lips,

When I lost my way, the lightning of her smile guided me,
If I lost my way, the lightening of her smile guided me,
as though I had lit my way with a lamp.
As if I gained illumination from a lamp,

As though I were drunk from the joy that came to me,
As if from joy, I gained perfect happiness,
served cup after cup of ambergris-scented wine.
As if I drank many toasts of the wine of tranquility,

Then, after it, I took separation in exchange, in bitter pain;
After that, I suffered the misery of distance,
and time has always withheld and bestowed.
While fate persisted in denial and prevention,

O dwellings! The paths to them twisted for the noble,
through the deserts, startling pebbles and flat stones.

Thick-necked, they cross its breadths toward
Severing their necks by tyranny, to a place
a goal that turns noble pale camels into specters.
Where the ghosts of the slain return,

Sunken-eyed, worn down by the vast waste, weary,
The imprisonment of eyes made them reveal their secret,
they journey by night in their halters, short-stepped and spent.
Walking with short steps, stumbling in cover,

What do you see after its downpour has quenched you,
parched or ravaged, thanks to that copious downpour.
With the rain of generosity, soaked and flooded?

How then did time's vicissitudes wear out its freshness,
So how did the turns of fate change it?
and how did the garden of pleasure become withered?
And how did the garden of joy become desolate?

And how did it become so miserable that I came to ask it,
and it gave no reply, though I persisted at length?
But it did not answer, however much I implored?

No blame lies upon the steadfast man who reveals what he endures
No blame to the skin that shows what it suffers
from separation, when he laments or speaks openly.
From separation, if it moans or cries,

Clarifying words that were puzzling,

Take them safely to yourself, strengthened,

Poems that silence the most eloquent, scattered,
leaving him speechless, though he is weighty in words and lavish in praise.

When he composes love verse, he sets the gray doves cooing,
If he composes amorously, the leaves shyly withdraw,
and if he turns hostile, he blocks the horizon with spears.
And if he denies, the horizons brim with spears.
