The sign of my forgetting you is if I say, after your departure—

now that you have gone—that the place of meeting is far.

And the appointed hour of my burning in the fire of love for you

is when a lull in that breeze arrives.

I yearn for the days of Najd; perhaps they

will one day lavish your nearness upon me.

Seasons of revelry—if they return in joy

with the neighbors of Salʿ, I shall be happy indeed.

These are the words of one whose ribs enfold a love:

time's new things grow worn, while that love stays new.

A lover with tears and longing ever renewed,

whose tears, at the dwelling, pour more strongly and increase.

So, since you left, the fire of longing in the dwelling knows

no dying down, nor do tear-streaming eyes grow dry.

Your memory keeps them sleepless every night,

while the eyes of the other lovers sleep.

Tormented by questioning the traces, and at times

he asks the driver of the white camels where he intends to go.

And indeed, a man whose secret parting has not exposed,

despite what he suffers because of you, is steadfast indeed.
