Spare me reproach, O you who spent the night blaming me.

For your reproach is neither my custom nor my concern.

Never will a grief-stricken man heed your reproach,

    torn between thoughts and sorrows.

The heart is mine when yearning wastes me away,

and the tears are mine, and the sorrows my own.

But for the clan's departure, I would not be anguished,

shedding tears over a tent's drainage trench and dwelling places.

The loved ones left those dwellings; I have since

divided my heart between ruins and dear friends.

The haunt of youthful pleasure—its landmarks lie deserted,

after their bloom, bereft of kin and neighbors.

But for distance and separation, I would not question

ruins worn away, bereft of loved ones and inhabitants.

But for you, O gazelle of the soft sands, I would not have crossed

the darkness between rocky heights and sand dunes,

nor left the riding camels in their reins,

resembling reins in deserts and lowlands,

trotting through the open lowland like halter-ropes, swift-striding,

with emaciated men above them, like halter-ropes.

Longing and swift riding have wasted them, atop the backs

of the riding camels—alas for camels and riders!

Upon their withers, they forsook the comfort of mattresses,

so they exchanged them for saddlecloths and camel-saddles.

What have I to do with the wind after separation, whenever it wafts

to me fragrance from Nu'm and Nu'man?

She passed over it, trailing her hems,

so its wormwood and buttercups all grew fragrant.

I once knew it to tell me of her—

what I loved to hear—and greet me with secrets.

A fragrance by which I recognized the winds, bringing me gifts

from the valley's bend, or from the gazelle of the ban-trees.

Time stretched on; then, after a while, it blew

toward me, and I failed to recognize it, though once I had.

Separation came between me and them,

and death and distance, after nearness, are alike.

May every outpouring cloud water the days of nearness,

with gushing rain, streaming down in steady showers.

Lovely hours of pleasure, in which I was happy

with a languid-lidded charmer, serene of gaze.

He went far; remembrance drew him near me when he went far.

May my soul ransom that far-off yet near one!

Life with him was serene a while; then it was clouded

by his distance from a lover whose patience is spent.

So he was left—as distance lengthened and severed were

the bonds of union—with a heart burning because of him.

He once grew drunk on his fragrant saliva

and wine, amid reed flutes and lutes.

Can a youth sober up, who spends evening and morning among

the lovers, drunk with longing for him?

With sleep driven away, separation set his tears flowing,

as though two springs gushed from his eyes.

He weeps when a gray dove trills in rapture

before dawn, on the bends of branches.

With its lament it stirs searing sorrows

in a lovesick heart, yearning toward the one who yearns.

All night it kindled with its song a fire of love

that flared in the heart of the enamored captive.

God! How, among the ban-trees, it brings back to me

love's passions, with sweet cooing and melodies!
