Ruins given over to longing, and dwelling places,

whose landmarks the four winds have effaced.

After their dear inhabitants, nothing remains but a heart

restless, and an eye streaming at separation.

They departed; I have a body melting with longing

after [their parting], and a heart in pain.

Foolishly I stood at the dwellings, though they had gone far

from them, addressing traces that cannot hear.

A crow hopped there—alas for dwellings

that reach evening with the pied crow their inhabitant.

What have I to do with ruins, or with a dove?

These I question, and that one coos.

A state I grew used to, while the time of youth

still held a breath of life, and youth's bow could still be drawn.

And if youth passes without a pleasure

that enchants the carefree, it is surely wasted.

You are not the first man to obey his heart,

and then be borne by passion at a trot and a gallop.

So cast off revelry's bridle before its chance is gone,

merrily—youth's prime is an intercessor whose plea is heard.

For life, life in its fullness, is either a garden

lush with foliage, or a cup passed round, its wine mixed with water.

That garden enchants you with the lovely flowers

it holds; that cup drives back your overwhelming care.

The glass grew fine, and its wine shone clear within it,

until you took them both for a shimmering mirage.

They matched in color and beauty of workmanship:

the cup more finely wrought, the wine more radiant.

    والعذلُ يصدعُ والملامةُ تقدعُ

    And many companions split my heart with their reproach;

    reproach cleaves, and censure curbs.

They reproached me; I said—with an ember in my breast—

to the reproachers, my ribs complaining of its blaze:

What do the reproachers want, now that there lie empty

the people's lovely summer retreat and spring abode?

And union passed away, its days so fair,

against my will; the hope of meeting came to nothing.

So leave a lover who had scarcely come to greet them

when parting called them away, and they said farewell.

He remained, his effort at patience failing him after

they had left, while tears lent him aid against it.

Dazed, looking about in bewilderment; neither his grief

avails him, nor does excessive yearning help.

He sorrows, and sudden tears come to his aid,

while birds sing and morning is streaked with light,

amid dwellings that almost, through what parting wrought,

wept with an eye of longing that sheds no tears.

They left; time changed the dwellings, yet their fragrance

    wafts through every corner there.

O you who spend the night, whose eye, since

the loved ones left, stays wakeful and does not sleep:

They left, though their veiling and their guarded seclusion

had, before separation, offered your heart contentment.

And indeed, by the days of al-‘Aqiq and La‘la‘,

al-‘Aqiq and La‘la‘ have never ceased to captivate me!

How often, in yearning for those two, I remonstrate with

my heart, while the protected pasture and sandy plain entice it!

    وهما يقودانِ الحنينَ فيتبعُ

    This one reminds it; that one stirs its longing;

both lead yearning on, and it follows.

A land where one sees, in every corner,

or every region, a rising-place for the beloved.

Our beloved, how long this fondness for shunning us,

cruelly, while I have a heart infatuated with you?

My tears and patience, on the day your pale camels were haltered,

were opposites: this defiant, that submissive.

O Patience, depart after the companions, for these

ruins lie desolate, empty of the beloved.

Nothing remains after the sandhill's neighbors departed

but love remembered and the gnashing of teeth.

O days of their sweet union, and all that has passed

of your happy time—can your season return?

No raincloud whose tears watered the dwellings,

whose rain-spouts the flashing lightning laid bare,

ever matched my tears or the fire of my anguish,

as the pale camels were saddled and the howdahs raised.
