وقدand already رحلَdeparted الأحبابُthe loved ones عنfrom علَمَيْthe two landmarks of نَجدِNajd
It is sorrow enough that I confide to you what lies within me,
I have grieved enough, my tears telling you what I have
when the loved ones have departed from Najd's two landmarks.
While friends have journeyed from my place in Nejd
وكيفand how وقدand indeed كنتُI was الأمينَthe trusted guardian علىover الهوىlove
أُحدَّثُI am told عنabout أشياءَthings طالَwas prolonged لهاconcerning them جَحْديmy denial
And how, when I was love's trusted guardian,
How could I, who was trusted with love
am I told of things I long denied?
Now talk of things long forgotten
وماand not لُمْتُهمْI blamed them فيماfor what جنوهthey caused it مِنَof النوىseparation
لعلميbecause I know بأنَّof the fact that اللومَreproach فيin الحبَّlove لاnot يُجْديavails
I did not blame them for the separation they brought about,
I blame them not for their betrayal
knowing that reproach in love avails nothing.
Knowing reproach helps not with love
فياso, O عاذليmy reproacher دعْleave عنكَaside from you عَذْليreproaching me فماfor not أرىI see
عليكَupon you ضلاليmy straying فيin الغرامِpassion ولاnor رشديmy right guidance
So, my reproacher, leave off reproaching me; I do not see
So cease your blame, don't blame me
my straying in passion, or my right course, as your burden.
Neither are right in love or reason
إليكَaway with you فهذاfor this الشوقُlonging قدalready عادَhas become مأْلَفاًa familiar abode

Away with you! This longing has become a familiar abode
For longing has become familiar to my heart
for my heart, and this anguish has become mine alone.
And anguish has become mine alone
أحِنُّI yearn إلىfor ليلىLayla فلوso if زالَceased حبُّهاlove for her

I yearn for Layla; were my love for her to fade—
I yearn for Layla, and if her love were lost
may it never leave my heart!—I would yearn for Hind.
I would wander restless to distant India

May my tears water the days of al-Jarʿa when they falter—
The days watered my tears when rainclouds called
the clouds, urged onward by a driver of thunder.
Stirred by a roving thunderclap

When bolts of lightning flash within them, I imagine them
When lightning flashed, the rainclouds left
as keen swords in a dust-blackened night.
Dark skies, no solace from the rain

A time we passed, its season sweet,
A time we spent joyfully, hours that were
in hours of union, all of them a season of roses.
Nothing but the season of flowers

Would that the days that passed near them
Would that days gone by might return
might return; but no return is hoped for what has gone.
No return for what is past and gone
ومماand among what شجانيgrieved me فيamong الأراكِarak trees حمامةٌa dove
تغنَّتْshe sang علىon فرعٍa branch منof البانِthe ban tree والزَّنْدِand fire-stick wood (as written)
And among the things that grieved me was a dove in the arak trees,
A turtledove sang from the acacia and wild myrtle
singing on a bough of ban and fire-stick wood.
Yearning, though far from where the herd had wandered
تنوحُshe laments اشتياقاًin longing والهديلُand the male dove أمامَهاbefore her
علىon البانِthe ban tree لمnot تعبثْtampered بهwith him راحةُthe hand البُعْدِseparation
She mourns in longing, though the male dove is before her,
How if she were to see the camp of her beloved
on the ban tree; separation's hand has not touched him.
Added to the length of her great estrangement
فكيفso how بهاwith her لوعاينتْif she witnessed موقفَthe scene of النوىseparation
مضافاًadded إلىto هجرِestrangement تطاولَgrew prolonged أوصدِِّor rejection
How would she fare, then, if she witnessed the scene of parting,
The stumbling roe at the acacia copse
together with prolonged estrangement or rejection,
Saying a secret farewell, my tears like scattering pearls
وخوصُand the sunken-eyed ones النياقِthe she-camels الواخداتِthe swift-striding ones بواركٌkneeling

لوشكِbecause of the imminence of النوىdeparture مابينَbetween حَلِّunfastening إلىto شَدِّfastening
and the sunken-eyed, swift-striding she-camels kneeling,
Sometimes I see her languishing gaze
for imminent departure, between loosening and tightening their loads,
Other times I hear her moan and bleat
ومَعْرَكٍَand a battlefield of بينٍparting فالغزالُso the gazelle مرَّوعٌterrified

يُودِّعنُيhe bids me farewell سرّاًsecretly ودمعيَand my tears كالعِدِّlike an unfailing spring
and parting's battlefield, the gazelle terrified,
I returned, joined to my anguish and sorrow
secretly bidding me farewell, my tears like an unfailing spring?
The day the lonely one left from Erjae the unique
فطوراًso at times أُرىI am seen فيهin it جريحَwounded by لحاظِهhis glances

At times I am seen there, wounded by his glances,
I ask the abode about the time of their return
and at times I am seen there, pierced by the spears of his stature.
Though I have no promise of their returning
وقدand indeed عدتُI returned مقروناًyoked بوجديto my anguish ولوعتيand my burning grief

And I returned yoked to my anguish and my burning grief,
The arrogant hyena still mocks with madness
on the morning the camel-driver had traveled by night from solitary al-Ajraʿ.
Swayed by conceit from Qussub's bending branches
أسائلُI question رسمَthe traces of الدارِthe dwelling عنabout أمدِthe duration of النوىseparation
واِنْand though لمnot أكنI was بالعَودِof a return منهمْfrom them علىupon وعدِa promise
I question the dwelling's traces about how long separation will last,
Time has lengthened between us
though I have no promise from them of return.
Nothing has changed for him or me
وذيand one possessing هَيفٍَa slender waist ماnot زالَceased يهزأُmocks قدُّهhis stature

وقدand already هزَّهُmade it sway الاِعجابُself-admiration بالقُضُبِat the branches المُلْدِthe supple ones
And a slender-waisted one whose stature never ceased to mock—
As if a pact with the One on High
swayed by self-admiration—the supple boughs:
That I should have from them nothing while I live
تطاولتِgrew long الأزمانُthe ages بينيbetween me وبينَهُand between him
وماand not حالَhe changed حاشاهfar be it from him ولاnor حلتُI turned away عنfrom عهدِa pledge
the years have lengthened between me and him,
I roused the sorrows of friends with a cure
yet he has not changed—far be it from him!—nor have I turned from the pledge.
And stirred the saddled she-camels with conversation
كأنَّas though الهوىlove إلىswore (reading uncertain) عليهupon him أَليَّةًan oath
بأنْthat لاnot أَرىI see ليfor myself منهfrom him ماعشتُas long as I live مِنany بُدِّescape
As though love had sworn an oath upon him,
I visited the land of the raiders one evening
that as long as I live, I should never be able to do without him.
So the murmur of love returned to guide my heart
وهيَّجتُand I stirred أشجانَthe sorrows of الرِّفاقِthe companions بعالجٍat ʿAlij
وهوجُand the headlong ones المطاياriding camels الناجياتِthe swift ones بناwith us تَخديstride swiftly
And I stirred my companions' sorrows at ʿAlij,
With grief for days of youth now past
while impetuous, fleet riding-camels strode swiftly with us.
And tears for a life now gone from them in plenty
وقدand already زرتُI visited ربعَthe abode of الظاعنينَthose departing عشيَّةًone evening
فباتَso it spent the night إلىto قلبيmy heart رسيسُthe lingering trace of الهوىlove يَهديbrings
And I visited the abode of those who departed one evening,
The ruined abode lent me its sickness
and all night love's lingering ache brought to my heart
And I returned it, for sickness mostly spreads
بنوحٍwith lamentation علىover ماwhat فاتَhas passed مِنof زمنِthe time of الصِّباyouth
ودمعٍand tears علىover عيشٍa life تقضَّىpassed away بهمْwith them رغدِeaseful

lament for the bygone days of youth,
Oh heart, you have become hardened to love
and tears for a life of ease passed with them.
Not called before that hardened
وأعدانيَand it infected me الرسمُthe traces الدريسُthe faded بسُقْمِهwith its sickness
فأعديتهُthen I infected it والسُّقمُand sickness أكثرُهmost of it يُعديis contagious
The faded traces infected me with their sickness,
If not hardened, after them you'd not have
and I infected them in turn; most sickness is contagious.
Remained, not even if made of deaf rock
فياso, O قلبُheart قدindeed أصبحتَyou have become جَلْداًsteadfast علىin the face of النوىseparation

O heart, you have become steadfast in the face of separation,
Who came to me distraught after you
and before that you were not called steadfast.
I came to love, and who comes distraught after me

Had you not been steadfast, you would not, after them,
Who passes the night watering it with copious tears
have survived—even had you become solid stone.
Flowing down upon that dusty soil

O our beloved ones, who dwelt at the valley bend after you,
And sees the flashing lightning fold itself
once you had departed from it—and who dwelt there after me?
Upon ribs in which there remains only passion

And who spent the night watering it with copious tears,
When the fever of love overcomes him
streaming down in longing over that cloddy earth,
I see him embrace the ruins of the dwellings aflame

and watched the lightning flicker, then curled inward
Cooling the torment of his agony with ruins
over ribs in which nothing remained but anguish?
While challenging the fire of passion in that coolness

When passion's heat scorched him, I saw him
No keen sword that repels assaults is ever
embracing the dwellings' ruins because of the burning heat,
Feared like the Indian straight and narrow
يُبَرِّدُhe cools بالائآرِwith the ruins (reading uncertain) لذعَthe sting of غليلِهِhis burning thirst

cooling with the ruins the sting of his burning thirst,
When embroiled in the battle, a striker
yet the blaze of longing's fire lay in that very coolness.
Passing by the gathering of lions

And no sharp sword, cleaving its targets, cutting clean,
He sees death lying in wait for him
feared for the assault of its two edges, traced to India—
Watching him between sharp edges

When my utterances come forth eloquently formed
and strides toward his adversary where lions meet,
Into poetry where none can match me

Every ode therein contains the thread of pearls
