so after them I abandoned Laʿlaʿ.

they had set, nor any dawning of my eye's delight.

the loved ones' dwelling after them, nor nurture it.

What have I to do with ruins, lamenting what has vanished

of them, recalling a playfield or a spring encampment?

I used to seek rain for the dweller in its precinct,

from my tears, when rain grew stingy and ceased.

in the days when it was a haunt for budding-breasted maidens,

glorying in them, a pasture for wild-cow calves.

O dwelling whose people time has toyed with,

and which time's turns made a barren, desolate waste,

I would not begrudge my tears pouring upon you

in torrents when the streaming rain clouds dispersed.

But they ran dry; their water was exhausted by

my fear that love's union might be torn apart.

And a dove cooed on a branch beside the dune,

when the branch donned spring's blossoms and flourished.

She lamented atop the highest boughs, and the swaying

    branches urged her to coo.

She called the male dove; he spent the night in bliss

at his nearness to her, while I spent mine distraught.

In my tearful lament I resembled her, except that she

lamented for joy, while I lamented in grief.

I poured my tears among the dwellings, though far away

from them the companions had gone, tents struck and farewells said.

until it seemed an inescapable duty upon me

to pour out tears at every trace of a dwelling.

And a wasteland I tasked my noble camels to cross,

when the company withdrew from me, resolved to depart.

I crossed it on she-camels that pounded the pebbles

and soft white stones with their footpads, despite soreness.

lapping the glittering mirage in the waste out of thirst.

at midday, that it held a drinking place.

alas for them, a watering place in its shimmer.

No hope of their reaching sweet watering places

after the companions camped at al-Ajraʿ,

or of the thickets becoming fresh again for them,

to graze there in the fertile, luxuriant meadow,

until I see the distant tribe draw near

to me and find separation's nose cut off.

thirst-crazed, like plaited straps in their emaciation.

Narrow-eyed, they have taken in exchange, after

their resting ground was gentle, a cramped and rugged camp.

fragrance, I folded my ribs around passion.

And the noble man is one who conceals love and its tale,

out of concern for it, in secrecy, lest both be heard.

And longing is that whose anguish keeps the eyelids,

in nearness or distance, from sleeping.

O my two reproachers for love, repeat

your reproach of me whenever you wish—or leave it.

by a heart that rushed toward it when it called.

turns aside a heart enthralled by ardent longing.

Reproach is too petty to restrain a lovesick man

who has known union and its sweetness, or hold him back.

He thrills when an east wind blows, or when there rumbles

a raging gale, or doves lament in wavering notes.
