I think that, if you knew the intensity of my love,

you would not torment my heart with estrangement.

And if you saw me weeping out of passion,

with tears that, since parting, have been my drink,

I would be pitied for what I endure; and enough for me—

that you pity what I suffer—enough for me.

O fawn who lent the gazelle a neck,

flaunting its beauty in every herd.

You have indeed consigned my eye to sleeplessness,

and my mind to turmoil when you departed.

So if passionate love is—and I make no exception—

my sin against you, then may my sin endure.

    واِنْ لم يَدْنُ نحبي منه نُحْ بي

    I swear: if my being forsaken lasts, I shall die;

and if my death does not draw near because of it, mourn for me.

And how many hopes I have in you that show me

where my contentment lies after my swift reproach.
