آليتُI swore لاnot حِلْتُI turned away ولاnor حِلْتُمُyou turned away
عنfrom كلَّall ماthat أعهدُهُI have known it منكمُfrom you
I swore that neither I nor you would turn away
I have resolved and you have not resolved
from all that I have known of you.
To abandon all the pledges between us
وبالذيand by what ارعاهI uphold it مِنof عهدِكمْyour pledge
بعدَafter نواكمْyour departure يُعرَفُis known المغرمُthe love-stricken man
And by the pledge of yours that I uphold,
By that which I cared for of your covenant
after your departure, the love-stricken man is revealed.
After your benevolence, the passionate is known
قدalready كنتُI was أبكيweeping والنوىwhile parting لمnot تَحِنْwas due
بعدُyet فماso what الحيلةُthe remedy أنnow that بِنتمُyou departed
I was already weeping when parting had not come
I used to weep while the intention was not ripe
as yet—what remedy, now that you have gone?
Afterwards, so what can be done, you determined
وكيفand how لاnot يَقلَقُbe troubled مِنْone who لمnot يزلْcease
يُقْلِقُهُtroubles him حبُّكمُlove for you الأقدَمُage-old
And how could he not fret, who has never ceased
And how can one not be restless who
to be troubled by his age-old love for you?
Is always made restless by your ancient love
أرتاحُI take comfort للريحِin the wind إذاwhen ماسرتْit does blow
مشمولةًblowing from the north تُخبِرُنيtells me عنكمُabout you
I find comfort in the wind whenever it blows,
I feel comforted by the wind when it passes
blowing from the north, bringing me tidings of you.
Bearing news of you and breathing your scent
كأنَّهاas though it تأسوheals جِراحَthe wounds الهوىof love
فهيso it is لقلبيfor my heart دونكمْin your absence مرهمُa balm
As though it healed the wounds of love,
As though it laments the wounds of passion
it is a balm to my heart in your absence.
So to my heart without you it is a balm
ماnot عَلِمَknew الرُّكبانُthe riders ماwhat حلَّbefell بيupon me
فيin الوجدِlonging لوif لمnot يَلُحِappear المَعْلَمُthe sign
The riders would not have known what befell me
The voyagers do not know what befell me
in my longing, had the telltale sign not appeared.
In fervent love had the guide not divulged the markings
كتمتُهI concealed it حتىuntil إذاwhen ماindeed بداit appeared
أظهرتِrevealed العبرةُthe tear ماwhat أكتمُI conceal
I concealed it until, when it came to light,
I concealed it until when it manifested
a tear revealed what I was hiding.
Tears revealed what I was hiding
ولمand not تزلْcease تُظهِرُreveal سرَّthe secret الهوىof love
منّيfrom me إذاwhen ماindeed زرتُهاI visit them الأرسُمُthe ruined traces
And they never cease to draw out love's secret
And you did not cease to disclose the secret of passion
from me whenever I visit them—the ruined traces.
From me whenever I visited the gentle hills
أسألُهاI ask them عنabout أهلِهاtheir people ضَلَّةًfoolishly
كأنّهاas though they تسمعُhear أوor تَفْهَمُunderstand
I ask them about their people, in folly,
I ask about her family feigning absence
as though they could hear or understand.
As though she can hear or understand
وربَّماand sometimes أعربَexpressed clearly عنabout كلَّall ماthat

And sometimes it gives voice to all that
And perhaps I express all that
heightens my longing—their mute dwelling-site.
Increases my fervor, though she is a foreigner
منازلٌdwellings قدnow صِرْتُI have come to أبكيweep لهاfor them

Dwellings I have come to weep for,
Encampments, I have come to weep for them
after once smiling in them,
After once smiling in them

with tears, since the loved ones departed,
With tears, after the beloved ones
that stream onto the soil of their ruins.
Upon the soil of their ruins I lament
اِنْif أعوزَwas lacking الغيثُrain وانand if أنجمَتْstopped raining
سحائبُclouds الرَّىَّof watering انبرتْsprang forth تَثجِمُpour down
If rain fails, and if they cease raining—
If rain is scarce and if the clouds
the nourishing clouds—my tears spring forth in torrents.
Of abundant rain rumble and swell
والدهرُand time حالانِفطوراًtwo states; so at times لهit has
بؤسيmisery وطوراًand at other times بعدهاafter it أنعُمُblessings
And time has two states: at times it brings
And time is inconstant, experiencing for me
misery, then, at other times, blessings.
Misery, then comfort after it
فلاso do not تَضيقَنَّbe distressed بأفعالِهby its deeds
فربَّماfor perhaps هانَbecame slight الذيwhat يَعظُمُlooms great
So never be distressed by its deeds,
So do not resent its actions
for what looms great may yet become slight.
For often the esteemed becomes insignificant
أحبابَناour beloved ones لاdo not تَرِدواcome to drink أدمعيmy tears
فاِنَّهاfor they are بعدَafter نواكُمْyour departure دَمُblood
Our beloved ones, do not come to drink my tears,
My loved ones, do not spurn my tears
for after your departure they are blood.
For after you they are blood
بَعُدْتُمُyou went far away فالدهرُso time فيin ناظريmy sight

You are far away, and time, in my sight,
You are distant, so time in my eyes
is dark without your lights.
Without your lights is gloomy

And my once-white life, after parting,
And my bright life after desire
your black desertion has clouded.
Was darkened by your swarthy estrangement

Were it not for my tears on the day I bade you farewell,
Had it not been for my tears the day I bid you farewell
love's secrets would not have been known.
The secrets of passion would not have been known
أأشتكيكمْshould I complain of you? أمor إلىto جورِكمْyour cruelty

Should I complain of you, or to your cruelty
Shall I complain of you or to your injustice
complain of what I have suffered at your hands?
Complain of what has befallen me from you

Nor do I believe, in my view, that
And I do not see that my course of action
one who has never ceased doing wrong will do me justice.
Grants me justice from one who has always wronged me

A disposition that has become his way,
Harmfulness has become for it a doctrine
and in it, he alone among mankind is Akhzam.
And it for harmfulness, beyond all mankind, is staunchest

Beloved ones—if asked, 'What is it that
Loved ones, if asked what we would choose
we choose?' I would say only, 'Them.'
I would not say but them

They surrendered me to love's captivity,
They surrendered me to the humiliation of passion
unjustly, and thought that I would escape unharmed.
Unjustly, and thought that I submit
قلبيmy heart علىdespite ماwhat نالَهُbefell it منهمُfrom them

My heart, despite what it has suffered from them,
My heart for what it bore from them
knows no lament and does not weary.
Does not know weeping and does not tire

Whether they go to Najd or Tihamah, it is always
Whether they support or accuse, it has not ceased
the frightened traveler to Najd and Tihamah.
To be apprehensive, supportive and accusative

And an eye that never dozed, fearing distance
And a watcher whose eyes the thought of parting does not sleep
and parting, when the sleepers slept.
And for whom tears prevent slumber

Our neighbors, behold, I still hold to
Our neighbors, here I am, still true
my pledge; are you as you once were?
To my vow, so are you as you once were?

Time's face toward us never turned
Time has not changed its face toward us
away from favor until you changed.
To displeasure, that you have changed

ولمand not أقلْإِنكمُI say that you خنتُمُyou betrayed

I kept faith when lovers proved faithless,
I fulfilled my duty when the people of passion betrayed
and did not say that you had betrayed.
And did not say that you betrayed

A veiled allusion, holding within it all that
An allusion in its folds is every thing
weakens me at your hands, and all that hurts.
That weakens me of you and pains me

If only, when your pale camels set out,
Would that you when your night journey departed
from Abraq al-Hannan, you had said farewell.
Had bid farewell at the brilliant goodbyes

Ah, for the sweetness of the nights of al-Ghada!
Alas for the pleasant nights of youth
If only they returned, and if only you returned!
If only they returned and you returned

You vanished, and our life no longer pleased us,
You went away, and there is no longer pleasure in our life
nor has the cup been hastened round since you left.
Nor was the wine cup stirred since you left

للبينِfor parting يبكيكمْweeps for you وذاand that one يَلطِمُbeats its cheeks
So the rain and stockflowers—this one, in sorrow,
So rain and shooting stars are sorrow
weeps for you at parting; that one beats its cheeks.
For the estranged one, weeping for you and lamenting

And the yellow flowers and their white ones:
And the yellowing of flowers and their whitening
that one a dinar, and this one a dirham.
This is a dinar and that a dirham

And the meadow is wet with drops of dew,
The meadow is verdant with the drops of dew
so fragrance from its reaches fills the nostrils.
And its fragrance is redolent from its corners

And love has an ember in my liver,
And for passion in my heart is an ember
that stays kindled through the night for fear of parting.
That remains lit in fear of parting

Shall I see their encampment at al-Lawa,
Will I then see their encampments in the terrain
drawn near to me by the mature, bite-scarred camel?
Brought near to me by the stooping camel

As though, in the night-journey's dust clouds
As though in the confusion of travel
it stirs, it were a red-shanked, earless ostrich.
He rouses them, the blackish violent one

How often his hooves were lifted off blood

It startles at the sound and its menace,
They tremble at his voice and terror
as though a speckled serpent lurked in its fold.
As though in his forelock there is a shackle

O you verses, the call of one
whom your most upright path enthralls.
Captivated by your most upright method

I extol you for what is in you to a status
that neither 'Ad nor Jurhum was granted.
Given by neither jurhum nor 'ad

Had you been in the age of men long gone,
If you were in the age of men now gone
they would have invoked blessings on your words, or saluted them.
Who prayed for your words or were silent
