أشاقكَhas it stirred your longing? مِنfrom غرامِكَyour passion ماwhat يشوقُawakens longing
وهاجتكَand stirred you المرابعُthe spring encampments والبروقُand the lightning flashes
Has what awakens longing stirred you through your passion?
I yearn for your love to the point of longing
And have the spring encampments and lightning flashes roused you?
And the lightnings and thunderbolts excite you
اِذاwhen هدرتْroared رواعدُهاtheir thunderclaps حَسِبْناwe imagined
عِشارَheavily pregnant she-camels السحبِof the clouds يزجرُهاdrives them الفنيقُthe prized camel-stallion
When their thunder roars, we imagine
When their rumblings roar we reckon
the clouds as pregnant she-camels driven by a prized camel-stallion.
The clouds are rebuked by the bright rainbow
مرابعُspring encampments كمhow long لبثتُI dwelt بهنَّamong them دهراًfor an age
ولستُand I am not مِنَfrom الصبابةِpassionate yearning أستفيقُI recover
Spring encampments—how long I dwelt among them,
How long have I remained with the lightnings
and I do not recover from passionate yearning.
And I am not recovered from my youth
وقفتُI stood علىby معالِمهاtheir traces ودمعيand my tears
ووجديand my passion ذاthis one الحبيسُcaptive وذاand that one الطليقُfree
I stood by their traces; my tears
I stood at their landmarks while my tears
and my passion—the latter captive, the former free.
Flowed and my heart was confined and freed
فلاso no وجديmy passion يبوخُdies down لهof it لهيبٌa flame
ولاnor دمعيmy tears يشحُّis sparing عليهwith them موقُan eye's inner corner
So no flame of my passion dies down,
So my heart does not lament with burning
nor does my eye's corner withhold my tears.
Nor do my tears refrain from flowing
أسائلُI ask مِنout of غراميmy passion عنabout أُناسٍpeople
ديارُهمُtheir homes اليمامةُal-Yamamah والعقيقُand al-Aqiq
Out of my passion, I ask after people
I ask about my passion for people
whose homes are al-Yamamah and al-Aqiq.
Whose abode is Yamamah and al-Aqeeq
وأحمِلُand I bear ماwhat أُطيقُI can endure فاِنْbut if تناءواthey go far away
حملتُI bore مِنَof الهوىlove ماwhat لاnot أُطيقُI can endure
And I bear what I can; but if they move far away,
I bear what I can, and if they refuse
I bear of love what I cannot endure.
I bear of love what I cannot bear
وليand I have قلبٌa heart بنارٍby the fire الشوقِof longing صالٍscorched
وطرفٌand an eye فيin مدامعِهits tears غريقُdrowned
And I have a heart scorched by longing's fire,
And I have a heart aflame with yearning
and an eye drowned in its tears.
And an eye wherein its tears are drowning
أضمُّI press عليهover it اِشفاقاًin apprehension يمينيmy right hand
مِنَof الذكرىremembrance فينَفُضُهاthen shakes it off الخفوقُthe throbbing
I press my right hand over it, in dread
I fold it gently out of compassion
of remembrance; its throbbing shakes my hand away.
So memories shake it and it trembles
سبيلُthe path الحبِّof love يسلُكُهاtreads it فؤاديmy heart
واِنْand even if أمسىhas become بماby what جلبتْit brought يضيقُfeels distressed
My heart treads the path of love,
My heart takes the path of love
even though it grows distressed by what that path has brought.
Though it feels too narrow for what it drew near
اِذاwhenever ماan emphatic particle قلتُقدI said, 'indeed' نكَّبتُI turned aside عنهfrom it
بدتْappeared ليto me فيin مجاهلِهits trackless wastes طريقُa path
Whenever I say, 'I have turned away from it,'
When I say, “I have avoided it,”
a path appears to me in its trackless wastes.
Its winding ways appear to me
تُتَيمِّنُيenslaves me with love اللواحظُthe glances فاتراتٍlanguid
وَيملِكُand rules صبوتيmy desire القدُّthe figure الرشيقُgraceful
Languid glances enslave me with love,
The glances make me dream of languid eyes
and a graceful figure rules my desire.
And my youth is ruled by the slender, tall one
وأفواهٌand mouths يُمَجُّis spat forth اليَّtoward me منهاfrom them
علىamid ظَمَئيmy thirst بهاfor them مسكٌmusk فتيقُunsealed
And mouths from which there flows toward me,
And mouths from which flows to my thirst
as I thirst for them, musk with its fragrance released.
Musk, so it is saturated from their nectar
فماso not يُدرىis known أخمرٌis it wine? بتُّI spent the night أُسقَىbeing given drink

So none can tell: was it wine I was given all night
None knows whether it is wine I was given to drink
from them, or pure wine in their saliva?
Or the nectar in their commingling

Our beloveds, you have forgotten the sweetness of a life
You who we loved, you forgot the sweet living
on al-Jar'a, made lovely by your presence,
When you enjoyed our company
وأياماًand days بكاظمةٍat Kazimah حباناbestowed on us

and days at Kazimah, when we were blessed
And days of concealed love you granted us
with the sweetness of their season by a life of ease.
When living was easy and tender

There I would pour the ewer's blood, undiluted,
I shed the wine of the cup generously
while the branch of our youth was tender and leafy.
And the branch of our youth was fresh and tender
مدامٌwine فيwithin النديمِthe drinking companion لهاfor it غروبٌa setting

Wine that sets within the drinking companion,
A cup passing round the companions has its setting
and rises in the cupbearer's palm.
And in the cupbearer's hand its rising

The morning draught is sweet with it, and we are lured
It gratifies daybreak and intoxicates us
into hours of its rapture by the evening draught.
Till the hours of its joy make us heedless

As though wafts of fragrance had spent the night in the garden,
As if the blossoms in the meadow spent the night
which aged wine spreads abroad for us.
Made rosy for us by the aged wine

My two friends, cease reproaching me, for my heart
My friend, leave my censure, for my heart
is ablaze with the fire of my longings.
Burns with the fire of my passions

And my tears pour forth in their homes,
And my tears upon their abode pour down
gushing over the open grounds of their encampments.
Flooding their grounds in streams

Am I to be patient after they set out by night—
Shall I be patient, now night has departed
the dear folk of the camp—and the company moved away,
And the companions went their separate ways?

I hear from you what no enemy would utter

At dawn, nor would a friend speak it

Then I am not that ardent lover, tormented
I am not the insouciant, obsessed with his love
by love of them, nor a lovesick soul filled with longing.
Nor the infatuated, impassioned youth

And no garden, watered by rain clouds until
Not a meadow the cloud watered, but
its blossoms grew lovely within it,
Became fragrant, while blossoms bedecked it

The cheek of the rose flourished in it
the anemone grew vexed within its mantle,
Until the anemone was perfumed among its plants

and fragrance wafted there after the rain,
And after the raindrops it exhaled a scent
beside which powdered aloeswood is put to shame,
Finer than what the copious rain emitted

With the most beautiful and delightful poetry
that clings to the minds of humankind.
Cherished by people for its harmony

When I recite it, hearts open up,
When I recite it, hearts find relief
constricted as they are by fierce anguish.
From the stress of desolation and grief

Verse—my imagination, at every moment,
My own poetry at every moment
is capable of composing splendid verse.
Rivals the excellent compositions of a peer

It races ahead of other poems
they halt, neither trotting nor pressing onward.
Until they halt and falter and fail
