Greet the sanctuary for me, and greet al-Musalla,

and a time at al-Raqmatayn that has passed away.

It was the most precious of times in my soul,

but its days vanished and dwindled away.

Then, when the company resolved to part,

the clan drank of my tears, once and then again.

An abode of longing, where I sent forth my tears,

after my loved ones’ departure, as downpour and drizzle.

A dwelling of which the morning rainclouds,

my tears, and time left only the least remnant.

I cannot forget the life once lived there,

and far be it from a lover to find consolation.

Najd did not deserve abandonment, that we should forget it; and

the sanctuary did not deserve to be wearied of.

O departing ones, these are my tears,

after you left, watering the encampment amid its traces.

We stood among them, and every friend

held nothing back from the streams of his tears.

And I recalled a light from union’s radiance,

which vanished from me the instant it shone.

It is like youth: scarcely had it visited

when it was said, “Its caravans have gone,” and it departed.

O you who forsake me, my patience once was

a keen sword, unblunted before your estrangement.

Can you truly approve of estrangement

for the yearning lover? Far be it—never!

Or will you forgive him his stumbling, as a favor

from you in love, if he has slipped?

If some people draw back from passion,

and abandon it, he does not abandon it.

How could he forget days of pleasure that passed

with you, while time was adorned by them?

Is there a way back to that time?

And it is folly to bid longing, “Desist!”

    صارَ اِلباً عليَّ مذ صارَ كلاّ

    If it eludes me, my grief remains;

it has allied against me since becoming a burden.

Where is the gazelle of the arak tree? Both were delightful together,

amid al-‘Aqiq’s gardens, in fragrance and shade.

For him I have eager expectation and yearning,

wherever he travels in the lands and settles.

He parted from me; when he was near, I was

joyful in him, my lot-arrow the winning al-Mu‘alla.

So ask, you two, about his wrongful forsaking of one like me:

after that union, how did he deem it lawful?

O my heart—and how can I call it a heart,

when, the day the company parted, it wandered mad and astray?

    فعلامَ ارتضى مِنَ الوجدِ خِلاّ

    I would not accept baseness as its companion;

why, then, did it choose love’s anguish as a friend?

And a gleam kept flashing deep in the night,

like a burnished sword drawn in terror.

I spent the night with the lightning, not tiring of my tears

at its flashes; nor did the lightning tire.

Distraught with love, I face passion with a body

that has not recovered since his estrangement wore it out.

This body is ill from the burning of separation

and estrangement; without his coming near, it will never heal.

    O versifiers, this is poetry,

subtle in the craft of verse, and sublime.

    It strides proudly upon al-Simak,

then, from there, looks down upon you.

And it is hateful to me that one who does not know

the craft of poetry should boast

of verse that, when poetry clothes in honor

those who speak it, clothes him in contempt and shame.

Never, in poetry’s racecourse, was he called

a front-runner—no—nor was he spurred on to finish second.
