Doves lament atop the two valley banks.

I am lost in grief over it, yet I do not speak.

It reminds me of loved ones; between me and them lie

Barren tracts followed by vast, trackless deserts.

Their cooing troubles me beneath the darkness,

So I go out at dawn and return at dusk, still longing for them.

Whenever I remember the beloveds at al-Liwa,

Streaming tears fall without a pause.

Must I each day feel, toward its open grounds,

Now they have left it, estrangement and distance?

And every day I shed a stream of tears over the ruins,

So rose-red that a slaughtered victim seems to lie within.

I yearn for the gleam of teeth whenever

A flashing bolt appears to us at al-Ajra‘ayn.

Those haunts—ever since their dwellers departed,

My eye is drowned in tears and sore.

Spring camps, worn away by time, whose soil

Diffuses a keen fragrance and perfumes the air.

Cloudbursts watered it; and if the cloud slackens,

A laden cloud of streaming tears will water it.

My two friends, why do I flinch whenever

Lightning flashes appear to us beneath the darkness?

Their glimmer stirs me, and I lament

My passion—and lovers’ complaints lay them bare.

Though long has it been since seeing al-Hajibiyya at al-Liwa,

Death is nothing but relief for the lover.

And the hardest affliction a lovesick man suffers in love

Is a reproacher concerning his beloveds, and an adviser.

Be gentle with one wasted by separation; for so long

The sick and the healthy have been alike to him.

Since his beloveds left, the lid of his eye

Streams with tears, and his heart is wounded by parting.

Cast down upon the ruins, after they were borne away

By far-flinging separation that exhausts she-camels.

Will a stout-cheeked, powerful she-camel bring me to the campsite,

Maddened by the dense saltbush there?

She presses on toward the acacias of al-Udhayb when

The exhausted and worn-out turn back from traveling toward it.

And I gaze at those tents, which seem,

Whenever they appear before the acacias, like acacias.

Tents that show me good fortune, if I visit their people

Within them soon after separation—a winning lot.

Yet how remote that time should be generous with their nearness,

For it has always been miserly with loved ones.

Our beloveds, my affection, as you already know,

Is sound in its bonds of fidelity, and sincere.

Trustworthy, when forgetfulness tugs at its side,

It has no leaning toward forgetting.

Faithful: whenever a people's resolve falters,

Its clear light appears in the darkness of betrayal.

No meadow displaying its finery among the gardens,

Embroidered after rain and breathing perfume—

The breeze glides through their reaches as though

It were their soul among the flowers of the leafy groves—

Is lovelier to behold than you, O Layla, whenever

Your lovely face appears, like morning.

From it, beauty and radiance appear before me,

As Yuh, the sun, rises before the people of the earth.

So, whenever I seek to describe a wondrous beauty,

I find that praise and panegyric for it have failed me.

So, Harith, tell me, by your life, what is it

That has silenced poetry's tongue, eloquent though it is?

Was it from the sheer excess of that beauty that I shrank in awe,

And came to shrink from composing verse?

These poems are nothing but gifts—

Whenever we seek to describe her—and inspirations.
