أَمَرتَنيshe commanded me بِسَترِto conceal كَشفِthe unveiling of غِطائيmy veil
إِذwhen أَرَتنيshe showed me صَباحَهاher morning فيin مَسائيmy evening
She commanded me to conceal the unveiling of my veil,
When she showed me her morning in my evening.
وَدَعَتنيand she called me وَأَودَعَتنيand she entrusted me with سِرّاًa secret
فيin سُراهاher night journey عَدَتshe outstripped بِهِwith it أَعدائيmy enemies
And she called me and entrusted me with a secret;
In her night journey, she outstripped my enemies with it.
وَنَهَتنيand she forbade me إِذwhen نَبَّهَتنيshe awakened me عَنfrom بَثِّspreading
هَواهاlove of her إِلىto ذَويthose possessed of الأَهواءِpassions
And, when she awakened me, she forbade me to spread
Love of her among those given to passions.
وَإِلىand until الفَجرِdawn أَوعَدتنيshe threatened me وَفيهِand at it
وَعَدتنيshe promised me الإِبلالَrecovery مِنfrom بَلوائيmy affliction
And until dawn she threatened me, while at dawn
She promised me recovery from my affliction.
فَأَزاحَتso she dispelled خَوفَfear of الوَعيدِthe threat بِوَعدٍwith a promise
قَبَضَconstricted اليَأسَdespair مِنهُfrom it بَسطُthe expansion of رَجائيmy hope
So she dispelled fear of the threat with a promise;
The expansion of my hope through it constricted despair.
وَعَلَيَّand upon me المَوتُdeath بايَعَتنيshe made a pact with me وَقالَتand she said
مَنwhoever وَفىis faithful ليto me مَنَحتُهُI reward him بِوَفائيwith my faithfulness
With death upon me, she made a pact with me and said:
Whoever is faithful to me, I reward with my faithfulness.
وَلِتَعليقِهاand because she bound المُنىhopes بِالمَناياto deaths
صِرتُI became أَهوىI desire مَنِيَّتيmy death لِمُنائيfor my hopes
And because she bound hopes to death,
I came to love my death for the sake of my hopes.

بِمَقامِwith the station of الأَبرارِthe righteous وَالشُهَداءِand the martyrs
And through her, when I fulfilled my term, she decreed for me
The station of the righteous and the martyrs.

And from the Sacred Mosque to
Al-Aqsa, she showed me the couches of the Night Journey.
وَأَقَرَّتand she soothed بِنورِwith the light of نارِthe fire of قِراهاher hospitality
فيin قُراهاher villages بِناظِريthrough my eye أَحشائيmy innermost being
And with the light of her hospitable fire she soothed
My inmost being through my eye, within her villages.
وَاِنثَنَتand she turned عِندَهاin her presence اِنثَنَتbowed ليfor me إِماماًas a guide

And she turned; in her presence there bowed, as my guide,
The Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, toward her, behind me.
وَبِروباصِهاand through her rūbāṣ (unclear) تَهَيّاwas readied خَلاصيmy deliverance
مِنfrom قَذىthe dross of طينَتيmy clay فَراقَso grew clear صَفائيmy purity
And through her rūbāṣ [unclear term], my deliverance was readied
From the dross of my clay; thus my purity grew clear.
وَوُرودُand approaching السَرابِthe mirage مِنهاfrom her ثَنانيtransformed me
مَورِداًa watering place لِلعِطاشِfor the thirsty بَعدَafter ظَمائيmy thirst
And approaching her mirage transformed me
Into a watering place for the thirsty, after my own thirst.
وَبِعَينِand by the spring of الحَياةِlife سِرتُI journeyed إِلىto حَيٍّan encampment
بِهِin it المَوتُdeath مُنيَةَthe wish of الأَحياءِthe living
And by the Spring of Life I journeyed to an encampment
Where death is the wish of the living.
غَيَّبَتنيshe made me absent مِنfrom بَعدِماafter أَشهَدَتنيshe let me witness
وَأَعادَتand she restored شَهادَتيmy witnessing بِنَداءِwith a call
She made me absent after letting me witness,
And restored my witnessing with a call.
فَثَنانيso checked me اِستِحياؤُهاher modesty فيin اِنثِنائيmy turning

Then her modesty checked me as I turned
Toward her, walking bashfully.
وَبِأَلطافِهاand with her gentle graces إِلَيهاto her دَعَتنيshe called me

And with her gentle graces she called me to her,
And showed me her descent into my sky,

With a book holding the cure for my dejection
At the threat of rejection, through the promise of reunion.

Firmly wrought, possessing resemblance and harmony
Amid the diversity of verses and parts.
فَعَلَيهِso to it جَعَلتُI made وَقفاًan endowment فُؤاديmy heart
عِندَماwhen جاءَcame جامِعُthe gatherer of الأَشياءِall things
So I made my heart an endowment to it,
When the gatherer of all things came.
وَإِلَيهِand to it عِندَduring الخِصامِdisputes اِحتِكاميmy appeal for judgment
فَلِذاso for this reason رُحتُI went forth داحِضاًrefuting خُصَمائيmy adversaries
And to it I turn for judgment in disputes;
Thus I went forth refuting my adversaries.
حَبَّذاhow welcome ماthat which بِهشwith it (uncertain reading) حَبَّتنيshe bestowed on me عَلىdespite الهَجرِestrangement
جَزاءًa recompense مِنهاfrom her لِصِدقِfor the truth of وَلائيmy devotion
How welcome what she bestowed on me despite estrangement [wording uncertain],
A recompense from her for the truth of my devotion.
فَسَناهاso her radiance أَهدىbestowed لِعَينيon my eye ضِياهاher brightness
وَهُداهاand her guidance أَسرىconveyed by night إِلَيَّto me هُدائيmy guidance
So her radiance gave my eye her brightness,
And her guidance conveyed my guidance to me by night.
بِصَفاهاin her purity مِمَنوعَةًwithheld أَنthat تَراهاit sees her
عَينُthe eye of راءِa beholder إِلّاexcept بِوَصفِthrough the attribute of الرائيthe beholder
In her purity, she cannot be seen
By a beholder's eye, except through the beholder's attributes.
وَلِعجزيand because of my inability عَنconcerning أَنthat أَراهاI see her بِإِيّاهاthrough her very self
بَدَتshe appeared بِالصِفاتِthrough the attributes وَالأَسماءِand the names
And because I cannot see her through her very self,
She appeared through attributes and names.
فَعَلَيهاso to her ماnot دَلَّguided قَلبيmy heart سِواهاanyone but her
وَإِلَيهاand to her لَمdid not تَدَعُنيshe summon me بِسَوائيthrough anyone but me
So none but she guided my heart to her,
And she did not summon me to her through anyone but myself.
وَلِهَذاand for this reason شاهَدتُI witnessed آياتُthe signs of صَحبيmy companions

And thus I witnessed my companions' signs,
And the utmost reaches of what they saw, at my own beginning.
