Shall I reveal a state whose concealment reason requires,
Shall I now reveal what is concealed though forbidden?
And conceal what has been disclosed at length in writing?
Yet conceal what expanding revelation contains?
وَأَعرَبُand I elucidate إِعجامِthe obscurity الكِتابِthe book لِأَكمَهٍfor one born blind

And elucidate the book's obscurities for one born blind,
Shall I interpret the Koran's mysterious letters though none
Whose understanding cannot grasp its script's vowel marks and dots?
Save He grasps its import, dots and vowel points?
وَأَدلىand I submit بِبُرهانيwith my proof وَلَمand did not أَرَI see قاضِياًa judge

And submit my proof, though I have seen no judge
Shall I plead my case though I see no judge
Who knows how to judge or possesses any justice?
Learned enough in law, just enough to judge?
وَأَدعوand I call upon طَغاةًtyrants لَيسَnot ليfor me قَوَّةًstrength بِهِمthrough them

And call upon tyrants through whom I gain no strength,
Shall I call tyrants though I've no power o'er them
And who have neither a strong pillar nor a band of kinsmen?
And they've no firm, staunch friends or comrades?

They answered the echo of the desolate valley when they called,
They answered the echo of the valley of separation when called
And strayed far from the bank of the valley where the call was made.
And swerved from the shore the caller stood upon,
وَعَنand from جامِعِthe gathering-place التَوحيدِdivine oneness شِركاًpolytheism تَفَرَّقواthey dispersed

And scattered in polytheism from the gathering-place of divine oneness,
They parted from the mosque of divine unity preaching idolatry
And endorsed the guidance of those who mislead, and went too far.
Saying they were guided by the misguiding, went astray.

They hastened when they thought the mirage was water; and when
When they thought the wave was rain they hastened to it but
They reached it and sought a drink from it, they fell flat short of it.
Reaching it, found it mirage, prostrated themselves before it.
غَلَواthey went to extremes زَمَناًfor a time حَتّىuntil عَلواthey rose فيin نُفوسِهِمtheir own minds

They went to extremes for a time, until they rose in their own eyes;
Long they went astray till in their souls they had declined
From their honor they sank to the depths of humiliation.
From the height of glory to degradation's depth.
بِتَبديلِهِمby their replacing لِشُكرِfor gratitude كُفراًingratitude تَبَدَّلواthey exchanged

By replacing gratitude with ingratitude, they traded
Exchanging thanks for blasphemy, they were transformed,
Their gardens for rugged ground bearing lote trees and bitter-fruited trees.
Their gardens changed by it to Jujube and Christ's thorn.
فَظَلّواso they remained حَيارىbewildered تائِهينَwandering عَنِaway from الهُدىguidance
إِذاwhen اِحتَمَلواthey journeyed وَفيand in دارِهِمtheir home حَطّواthey settled
So they remained bewildered, wandering away from guidance,
They remained perplexed, wandering, straying from the right path.
When they journeyed and when they settled in their home.
When they endured it and made it home, they were degraded.
فَنُماهُمso their growth بُؤسيmy misery وَراحَتُهُمand their ease عَناًtoil

وَأَمنَهُمand their security خَوفٌfear وَقُربِهِمُand their nearness شَحطُremoteness
Thus their growth is my misery, and their ease is toil;
My wretchedness made their life misery, their peace disquiet,
And their security is fear, and their nearness remoteness.
Their safety fear, their nearness farness.

And how can one see the face of favor, turning
How can the seeker of contentment see the face of approval
Toward the shade of thick ghada wood, with wrath engulfing him?
Turned from him loftily in anger?
فَعَنّىso away from me بِهِمwith them وَاِرغَبand incline بِزُهدِيَthrough my renunciation فيهِمُof them

So away with them from me! Through my renunciation of them, incline
So I turned from them and inclined with my monkishness from them
Toward me, for in me the rightly guided find openness.
To me, so stretch to the people of right guidance your hand,
لِأَنّيbecause I فيin حَجرِthe guardianship النُهىreason رُحتُI became ناشِئاًgrowing up

For I grew up in reason's keeping,
For I was raised in the lap of prohibition as a child
And in the lap of reason's ladies, swaddling bands embraced me.
And in the laps of the women of prohibition was lulled to sleep.
وَإِنand even if لَمnot أَكُنI am نَجلَa son المَعاليlofty honor لِصُلبِهاfrom her loins

Even if I am not lofty honor's son, sprung from her loins,
Though not the son of the eminent in ancestry
I am nonetheless her grandson, without a word of falsehood.
I am to them, without any lying, a scion.
فَلاso do not تَعُدreturn بِالعُدوىwith enmity فَوَجهُكَfor your face وُجهَتيmy direction
فَماfor there is no لِلَبيبٍfor a discerning person قَطُّever فيin غَيرِهاother than it قَطُّa share
So do not return with enmity, for your face is my direction;
So tempt me not, for your way is my way.
For a discerning person never has a share in any other direction.
The keen-witted never goes into others'.
فَطَودُfor the mountain فَخاريmy pride لَيسَnot يِرقاهُascends it طائِرٌa bird

وَفيand along ساحِلٍa shore مِنof شِطِّهِits bank يَغرَقُdrown البَطُّthe ducks
For no bird can ascend the mountain of my pride,
My proud steed is not made awkward by any bird.
And along a stretch of its shore, ducks drown.
On its shore the duck sinks.

And from the pearls I have drawn from its depths,
From the pearls it extracts from the depths
There is a necklace for sublimity's neck, and an earring in her ear.
Are anklets on the noble's leg, earrings in her ears.

When the heads of the people try, in some affair,
If the heads of men engage in muddled meddling
To entangle themselves, my words supply a comb to disentangle them.
My speech to loose them flows like a comb.

For no schools would be known without my lessons,
Through my instruction schools gained renown.
Nor would the lodges be honored without my bond with them.
Through my ties with them bushes gained flowers.
سَطَوتُI struck لِأَنَّbecause الوَقتَthe moment سَيفيmy sword عَلىagainst العِدىthe foes

I struck, for the moment is my sword against my foes,
I have power for time's sword is my sword against the foe.
And one whose moment is a sword has the right to strike.
By time a sword comes rightfully that prevails.
وَسَكَراًand in intoxication بَسَطتُI unfolded القَولَthe speech فيهِabout it وَعِندَماand when

And, intoxicated, I unfolded speech about it; and when
I spread talk of wine in it while sober but
My sobriety returns, that unfolding is torn apart by it.
When I return sober by it talk is shredded.

And what I have claimed above humankind is my true station;
I never claimed what my rank is among mankind
So I neither understate it nor exaggerate.
So I have no immoderation or excess before me.
