أَياO جيرَةًneighbors بِلَوىat the sand bend of الأَبرَقَينِal-Abraqayn
دَناdrew near بِاِنتِزاحِكُمwith your departure حينُthe hour of حَينيmy death
O neighbors at the sand bend of al-Abraqayn,
O neighbors with the lightning of two dawns,
With your departure, the hour of my death drew near.
You approached while my heart was burning,
فَأَضرَمتُمso you kindled بِالجِوىwith anguish نارَthe fire of قَلبيmy heart
وَأَطفَأتُمand you quenched بِالنَوىwith separation نورَthe light of عَينيmy eye
So with anguish you kindled the fire of my heart,
So you ignited the fire of my heart with yearning,
And with separation you quenched the light of my eye.
And extinguished with your determination the light of my eyes.
وَأَيسَرُand the mildest ماwhat حَلَّbefell بيme بَعدَكُمafter you left
ضَنىًa wasting sickness حالَintervened ماwhat lies بَينَbetween روحيmy soul وَبَينيand me
And the mildest of what befell me after you left
The easiest thing that befell me after you
Was a wasting sickness that came between my soul and me.
Was the anguish that came between my soul and me.
وَلَيلَةَand on the night of إِعراضِكُمyour turning away لاحَshone ليbefore me
بَياضُthe whiteness of دُجىthe night-darkness of لِمَّتيmy locks كَاللُجَينِlike silver
And on the night you turned away, there shone before me
On the night you turned away, the whiteness
The whiteness of my night-dark locks, like silver.
Of the dark night was like two mornings to me.
حَفِظتُI kept faith وَضَيَّعتُمand you squandered صُحبَتيmy friendship
وَقابَلتُمand you answered صِدقَthe sincerity of وُدّيmy affection بِمينِwith falsehood
I kept faith, while you squandered my friendship,
I kept faithful to our companionship while you wasted it,
And you answered my sincere affection with falsehood.
And you met my true love with betrayal.
وَماand not زِلتُI have ceased أَقضيI repay دُيونَthe debts of الغَرامِpassion
لِمَنto one whose حَكَمَهُhis ruling فيin الهَوىlove مَطَلُdelaying repayment of دَينيthe debt owed me
And I still repay the debts of passion
Yet I continue to pay the debts of passion
To one whose ruling in love is to delay repaying what is owed me.
To those whose tyranny in love has chained my obedience.
