تَجَرَّدَتstripped itself نَفسِيَmy soul عَنof نَفسيmy self
فَزالَso fell away بِالخَلعِthrough disrobing لَهاfor it لُبسيmy garb
My soul stripped itself of my self;
My soul stripped itself of self
so, through that shedding, my garb fell away from it.
Removing its garb, releasing all obscurity
وَراحَand became يَوميmy today عَنcompared with غَديmy tomorrow ناقِصاًfalling short
بِضَعِفِby twice ماwhat زادَit gained عَلىover أَمسيmy yesterday
And my today fell short of my tomorrow
And my today lacked tomorrow
by twice what it had gained over my yesterday.
With little added since yesterday's eve
وَلَمand did not أَزَلI cease أَرصُدُI watch بَدرَfull moon الدُجىthe night-darkness
حَتّىuntil اِجتَلَيتُI beheld البَدرَthe full moon فيin الشَمسِthe sun
And I kept watching the full moon of the night
Yet I kept watch for the moon of darkness
until I beheld the full moon in the sun.
Until in the sun the moon I espied
وَظَلَلتُand I continued أَبغيI seek الظِلِّthe shade مِنهاfrom it بِهِthrough it
مِنfrom عالَمِworld الحِسِّthe senses إِلىto القُدسِholiness
And I kept seeking shade from the sun through the moon,
And I sought shade from it within it
from the world of the senses to holiness.
From the world of senses to the Divine Presence
فَفُزتُso I gained بِالفَيءِwith the shade فَلَمand did not يُضحِنيexpose me to the sun
مُذsince عُذتُI took refuge بِالجِنِّwith the jinn مِنَfrom الإِنسِhumankind
So I gained the shade and was not exposed to the sun,
So I attained the spoils and since have not lost
since I took refuge with the jinn from humankind.
When I sought refuge with the unseen from mankind
