إِلَيكَ أُنسي بِناسي زادِ إيحاشي

إِلَيكَ أُنسي بِناسي زادِ إيحاشي

وَمِنكَ قُربِيَ عَنّي أَبعَدَ الواشي

وَمِنكَ قُربِيَ عَنّي أَبعَدَ الواشي

My intimacy with you has deepened my estrangement from my people.

To you I confide my people's supplies to enliven me,

And my nearness to you has driven the slanderer far from me.

And from you my proximity has distanced the slanderer.

وَفيكَ جَمعُ العِدى عَنّي اِنثَوا فِرقاً

وَفيكَ جَمعُ العِدى عَنّي اِنثَوا فِرقاً

لَمّا اِستَجاشوا بِما لاقوهُ مِن جاشي

لَمّا اِستَجاشوا بِما لاقوهُ مِن جاشي

And through you, the gathered foes withdrew from me in separate bands,

In you the enemies combine against me dispersing separation,

When they sought reinforcements because of the courage they encountered in me.

When they were provoked by what they saw of my fervor.

وَإِذ بِكَ أَضحى اِتِّقائي في لِقائِهِم

وَإِذ بِكَ أَضحى اِتِّقائي في لِقائِهِم

لَم أُرمَ مِنهُم بِسَهمٍ غَير طَيّاشِ

لَم أُرمَ مِنهُم بِسَهمٍ غَير طَيّاشِ

And since my protection in facing them came through you,

And when through you my piety in meeting them became at dawn,

No arrow they shot at me struck true.

I did not cast at them any arrow but a gentle one.

وَلا وَما مِنكَ لي قَد راحَ نافِلَةً

وَلا وَما مِنكَ لي قَد راحَ نافِلَةً

لَم أَلقَ فيكَ المَنايا غَيرَ بَشّاشِ

لَم أَلقَ فيكَ المَنايا غَيرَ بَشّاشِ

No—by the bounty that has come to me from you—

And whatever bounty from you has departed to me unsolicited,

I have never faced death for your sake without a smile.

I did not meet death in you except with a smiling face.

وَفي اِمتِحانِكَ لي أَخلَصتُ مُتَّبِعاً

وَفي اِمتِحانِكَ لي أَخلَصتُ مُتَّبِعاً

أَهلَ اِختِصاصِكَ في نَفسي لِإِنعاشي

أَهلَ اِختِصاصِكَ في نَفسي لِإِنعاشي

And in your testing of me, I was sincere, following

And in your testing of me I followed sincerely

Your chosen ones within myself, to revive me.

The people of your specialization in myself for my invigoration.

مَشوا وَطِرتُ إِلى عَلياكَ مُنفَرِداً

مَشوا وَطِرتُ إِلى عَلياكَ مُنفَرِداً

وَأَينَ يَدرِكُ إِثرَ الطائِرِ الماشي

وَأَينَ يَدرِكُ إِثرَ الطائِرِ الماشي

They walked, while I flew alone toward your heights.

They went while I strode to your loftiness alone,

And how can the walker catch the flier's trail?

And where can the walker reach the track of the flying bird?

وَإِذا وَنوا عَنكَ في قَصدٍ بِطَشتُ إِلى

وَإِذا وَنوا عَنكَ في قَصدٍ بِطَشتُ إِلى

رِضاكَ إِذا لَم يَنَلهُ غَيرُ بِطّاشِ

رِضاكَ إِذا لَم يَنَلهُ غَيرُ بِطّاشِ

And when they faltered in seeking you, I pressed forcefully toward

And if they swerved from you with intention, I hastened

Your pleasure, when none but the forceful could attain it.

To your satisfaction, if none shall attain it but the energetic.

وَحاوَلوا بِيَ عَدلاً عَنكَ إِذ عَذَلوا

وَحاوَلوا بِيَ عَدلاً عَنكَ إِذ عَذَلوا

وَهَل يُميلُ لَبيباً قَولُ أَوباشِ

وَهَل يُميلُ لَبيباً قَولُ أَوباشِ

And they tried to turn me away from you when they reproached me.

And they attempted to divert me from you when they were hostile,

And can the rabble's talk sway a discerning man?

But can a rational being be swayed by the words of the foolish?

وَمُستَحيلٌ خَلُوّي مِن هَواكَ وَلَم

وَمُستَحيلٌ خَلُوّي مِن هَواكَ وَلَم

يَنفَكُّ في جُملَتي مِن نَشأَتي ناشي

يَنفَكُّ في جُملَتي مِن نَشأَتي ناشي

And freedom from your love is impossible for me; it has never

And my being devoid of your love is inconceivable, and has not

Ceased to grow throughout my being since my birth.

Ceased in my constitution since my youth, the forgetful.

وَما نَشَرتُ فَمَطوِيٌّ وَمُظهِرُهُ

وَما نَشَرتُ فَمَطوِيٌّ وَمُظهِرُهُ

فَمُضمِرٌ لا تَراهُ مُقلَةُ العاشي

فَمُضمِرٌ لا تَراهُ مُقلَةُ العاشي

And what I have unfolded is folded away, and its revealer

And I have not disclosed what is folded, and its appearance

Is a concealer whom the dim-sighted eye cannot see.

Is concealed - the dim-sighted perceives it not.

وَفي الزَوايا خَبايا لَيسَ يُدرِكُها

وَفي الزَوايا خَبايا لَيسَ يُدرِكُها

مِمَّن تَعاطى الخَفايا غَيرُ فَتّاشِ

مِمَّن تَعاطى الخَفايا غَيرُ فَتّاشِ

And in the corners lie secrets that none can discern

And in the corners are hidden secrets not grasped

Among those who pursue mysteries, save a tireless searcher.

By any who has dealt with concealments but the searcher.
