May I never attain my hopes through meeting you,

I gained no hopes from you through our meeting,

if separation changes my feelings toward you.

Since being away from you is now my state.

وَأَلِيَّةً بِجَميلُكُم قَبلَ الجَفا

وَأَلِيَّةً بِجَميلُكُم قَبلَ الجَفا

وَجَمالِكُم ذاكَ العَزيزِ الغالي

وَجَمالِكُم ذاكَ العَزيزِ الغالي

And I swear by your kindness before estrangement,

Yet with your beauty I'm still infatuated,

and by that cherished, precious beauty of yours:

For your sublime charm is precious to me.

إِنّي لِأَطوَعُ مَن تَهاوى لِلهَوى

إِنّي لِأَطوَعُ مَن تَهاوى لِلهَوى

طَوعاً وَأَعصى الناسَ لِلعُذّالِ

طَوعاً وَأَعصى الناسَ لِلعُذّالِ

Indeed, I am the most obedient of those who fall headlong into love,

I'm the most compliant of those in love,

willingly—and, of all people, the most defiant toward reproachers.

Obedient to passion, though people blame me.

يا جيرَةً خَفَّ السُراةُ بِعيسِهِم

فَتَضاعَفَت بِمَسيرِهِم أَثقالي

فَتَضاعَفَت بِمَسيرِهِم أَثقالي

O neighbors, the night travelers sped off on their pale camels,

O neighbors, your departure saddened me,

so my burdens multiplied with their departure.

Your journey has made my burdens double.

تَرتاحُ روحي بِالغَداةِ لِنَشرِكُم

تَرتاحُ روحي بِالغَداةِ لِنَشرِكُم

وَيَزيدُها قَلَقاً مَعَ الآصالِ

وَيَزيدُها قَلَقاً مَعَ الآصالِ

My soul rejoices in your fragrance in the early morning,

My soul finds rest when you gather at dawn,

and that fragrance heightens its restlessness as evening comes.

But anxiety increases when dusk does fall.
