ليfor me فيin خَلوَتيmy solitude بِجَلوَةِthrough the unveiling of مَحبوبيmy beloved
مَغيبٌabsence عَنfrom مَشهَدِthe sight of الرُقباءِthe watchers
In my solitude, through my beloved's unveiling,
In my solitude with the beauty of my beloved
I am absent from the watchers' sight.
Hidden from the sight of spies
وَاِنقِطاعيand my detachment بِهِthrough him إِلَيهِtoward him ثَنانيturned me back
بِفِناءٍthrough annihilation أَطالَhe prolonged فيهِin it بَقائيmy abiding
And my detachment, through him and toward him, turned me back
My turning to him made me disappear in him
through an annihilation in which he prolonged my abiding.
Prolonging my existence in annihilation
وَوَراهُand behind him مِنfrom حَيثُwhere أَضحىhe became أَماماًin front
لِوَرائيfor my rear أَمسىbecame أَماميmy front وَرائيmy rear
And behind him—where he came to be in front
What lay beyond him became, when he came before me,
of what lay behind me—my front became my rear.
Behind me, my fore and my aft,
وَبِإِيّاهٍand through him himself إِذwhen بَداhe appeared ليto me كَإِيّايَas my own self
إِلَيهِto him عَرفَتُI recognized مِنهُfrom him دُعائيmy invocation
And through his very self, when he appeared to me as my own self,
And I, when he seemed like me to me
I came to know, from him, my invocation to him.
Knew my prayer in calling upon him.
وَاِستَوَتand became equal نِسبَةُthe relation of الجِهاتِthe directions إِلَيهِto him
مَعwith تَعاليهِhis transcendence عَنbeyond حُدودِthe bounds of الفَضاءِspace
And all directions became equal in their relation to him,
All directions took on equal relation to him
while he transcends the bounds of space.
Though he is too sublime for space to contain
قَدindeed أَرانيhe showed me السَماءَthe sky قِبلَةَthe direction of prayer for أَرضيmy earth
وَثَنىand turned الأَرضَthe earth قِبلَةًa direction of prayer لِلسَماءِfor the sky
Indeed, he showed me the sky as my earth's direction of prayer,
The sky showed me my earthly orientation
and turned the earth into a direction of prayer for the sky.
Bending the earth into orientation with the sky
فَلِهَذاso for this reason لَدَيهِin his presence أَضحَتbecame صَلاتيmy prayer
بِرُكوعيin my bowing وَسَجدَتيand my prostration وَاِستِوائيand my standing upright
Thus, in his presence, my prayer is now
Thus with him my ritual prayer consists In my kneeling, my prostration, and my upright stance.
in my bowing, my prostration, and my standing upright.
