نَهَدتُI set out إِلىto الهِندِIndia فيamong فِتيَةٍyoung men
مِنَof العَرَبِthe Arabs جارِهِمُtheir neighbor لاnot يُضامُis wronged
I set out for India among young men,
I roamed to India with Arab youths
Arabs whose neighbor is never wronged,
Whose neighbors they wrong not at all
غَراماًout of passion بِساميfor one lofty in الذُرىthe summits وَصلُهُunion with him
بِغَيرِthrough anyone other than بَنيthe sons of حامِهِhis Ham لاnot يُسامُis sought
Out of passion for one of lofty heights, union with whom
Yearning for the most sublime of creatures and joining him
Is sought only through the sons of his Ham.
With other than the sons of Ham, no injustice done
حَبيبٌa beloved أَبىrefused أَنto يَرىsee مَربَعاًa spring encampment
وَلَيسَand there is not لَهُfor him فيin رُباهُits hills مَقامُan abode
A beloved who refused to behold a spring encampment
A beloved who refused to see a square house
On whose hills he had no abode.
And had no place of rest in his dwellings
فَلَمso ... not أَرَI see داراًa dwelling سِوىexcept دارِهِhis dwelling
وَماand nothing لِسواهُfor anyone other than him بِهاin it وَالخِيامُand the tents
So I saw no dwelling except his,
So I saw no other house but his house
And nothing there belongs to another—not even the tents.
And none possessed it save for the tents
هُوَhe الكُلُّthe All لاnot غَيرُهُanyone other than him كُلُّهُall of him
فَكُلٌّso everyone بِهِwith him مُغرَمٌenamored مُستَهامُmaddened by love
He alone, in his entirety, is the All;
He is the whole, none other, the whole of him
So all are enamored of him, maddened by love.
So all are enamored and beside themselves for him
