أَخلَصتُI was sincere فيin الحُبِّlove وَياand oh حَبَّذاhow wonderful
إِنif قَبلَaccepts المَحبوبُthe beloved إِخلاصيmy sincerity
I have been sincere in love—and oh, how wonderful,
With utmost love and sincerity
if the beloved accepts my sincerity!
I hope my beloved accepts my loyalty
وَرُحتُand I became مِنfrom وَجديmy ardent longing بِهِfor him طائِعُobedient to
الطائِعِthe obedient one فيهِconcerning him عاصيdefiant of العاصيthe defiant one
And from my longing for him, I became obedient to
In ecstasy I follow his command willingly
the obedient concerning him, defiant of the defiant.
For in his love, even the disobedient obey readily
أُقصيI banish عَلىbecause of سَلوانِهِforgetting him خِلّan intimate friend
لِيَof mine الدانيthe near one صَبَّهُhis ardent lover القاصيthe distant one
I banish, for forgetting him, a friend
In solitude I pine, separated from him
of mine who is near—his faraway, ardent lover.
While he who is far, fills my cup abundantly
