وُجودٌexistence بِغَيرِwithout ثَراءٍwealth عَدَمnothingness
وُجودٌ بِغَيرِ ثَراءٍ عَدَم
وَخَمرٌand wine بِغَيرِwithout نَديمٍa drinking companion نَدَمregret
وَخَمرٌ بِغَيرِ نَديمٍ نَدَم
Existence without wealth is nothingness.
And wine without a drinking companion is regret.
وَماand not كاسَacted wisely بِالكاسِwith the cup غَيرُother than اِمرِئٍa man
وَما كاسَ بِالكاسِ غَيرُ اِمرِئٍ
عَلىagainst الغَمِّsorrow عاوَنَهاhe aided it بِالنَغَمwith song
عَلى الغَمِّ عاوَنَها بِالنَغَم
And none has used the cup wisely save a man
Who aided it against sorrow with song.
فَروحُso the solace النُفوسِof souls بَرراحِin the wine of الكُؤوسِthe cups
فَروحُ النُفوسِ بَرراحِ الكُؤوسِ
وَشَمَلِand the fellowship of النَدامىdrinking companions إِذاwhen ما(emphasis) التَأَمit comes together
وَشَمَلِ النَدامى إِذا ما التَأَم
For souls find solace in the wine of cups,
And in the fellowship of drinking companions when they gather.
