خَلَعتُI cast off بِلِبسِby donning العَزِّglory ثَوبَthe robe of تَنَكُّسيmy abasement
خَلَعتُ بِلِبسِ العَزِّ ثَوبَ تَنَكُّسي
وَهاجَرتُand I forsook سُكّانَthe dwellers of المَدارِسِthe schools وَالرَبطِand the lodges
وَهاجَرتُ سُكّانَ المَدارِسِ وَالرَبطِ
Clad in the raiment of glory, I cast off the robe of my abasement.
By donning glory, I cast off the robe of my abasement.
And I forsook the denizens of madrasas and Sufi hospices.
And I forsook the dwellers of schools and lodges.
وَفيand amid فِرَقِthe divisions of الجَمعِunion اِجتَمَعتُI gathered بِفَرقَةٍwith a band
وَفي فِرَقِ الجَمعِ اِجتَمَعتُ بِفَرقَةٍ
أَصَبتُI obtained بِهِمthrough them قَولُthe words of المُصيبِthe one who is right مِنَfrom المُخطيthe one who errs
أَصَبتُ بِهِم قَولُ المُصيبِ مِنَ المُخطي
Among the factions of union, I joined a band.
And amid the divisions of union, I joined a band.
Through them I attained the word of one who is right, not one who errs.
Through them I obtained the words of one who is right from one who errs.
وَرُحتُand I went forth وَداريand my dwelling لِلمُحِبّينَfor the lovers دارَةٌa circle
وَرُحتُ وَداري لِلمُحِبّينَ دارَةٌ
لَهُمtheirs خَطُّهاits line الجاريflowing وَليand mine نُقطَةُthe dot of الخَطِّthe line
لَهُم خَطُّها الجاري وَلي نُقطَةُ الخَطِّ
And I came to be, my dwelling a circle for lovers.
And I went forth, my dwelling a circle for lovers.
Its flowing circumference is theirs, while mine is the line’s point.
Its flowing line is theirs, and the line’s dot is mine.
وَلَمّاand when رَأىsaw أَهلُthe people of الهَوىlove شَكلُthe form of نُقطَتيmy dot
وَلَمّا رَأى أَهلُ الهَوى شَكلُ نُقطَتي
تَداعواthey called one another إِلىto الإِقرارِacknowledgment بِالشَكلِof the form وَالنَقطِand the dotting
تَداعوا إِلى الإِقرارِ بِالشَكلِ وَالنَقطِ
And when the people of love beheld the form of my point,
And when the people of love saw the form of my dot,
They called one another to acknowledge both shaping and dotting.
They called one another to acknowledge the form and the dotting.
وَبيand through me عايَنواthey beheld نَشرَthe unfolding of النُفوسِsouls بِطَيِّهاby folding them
وَبي عايَنوا نَشرَ النُفوسِ بِطَيِّها
وَفِيَّand in me رَأَواthey saw نَصبَthe setting up of المَوازينِthe scales بِالقِسطِwith justice
وَفِيَّ رَأَوا نَصبَ المَوازينِ بِالقِسطِ
Through me they beheld the unfolding of souls within their enfolding.
And through me they beheld the unfolding of souls through their folding.
And in me they saw the scales set up with justice.
And in me they saw the scales set up with justice.
وَلَستُand I am not عَلىto غَيبٍthe unseen أُحيلُI refer مُقَلِّديmy follower
وَلَستُ عَلى غَيبٍ أُحيلُ مُقَلِّدي
فَيَبدوso it appears الرِضىassent بِالقَولِto the words مِنّيfrom me عَلىover سَخطِresentment
فَيَبدو الرِضى بِالقَولِ مِنّي عَلى سَخطِ
Nor do I refer my unquestioning follower to some unseen matter,
And I do not refer my follower to the unseen,
Only for assent to my words to show above an undercurrent of resentment.
Lest assent to my words appear over resentment.
