وَلَولا لَجامُ الطالِبِيّينَ في فَمي

وَلَولا لَجامُ الطالِبِيّينَ في فَمي

لِاَعرَبتُ عَن إِعجامِ حالِ اِبنِ مُلجَمِ

لِاَعرَبتُ عَن إِعجامِ حالِ اِبنِ مُلجَمِ

And were it not for the Talibids’ bridle in my mouth,

Were it not for the bridle of critics in my mouth

I would have made plain the obscurity of Ibn Muljam’s condition,

I would have expressed the incapacity of Ibn Muljam's state

وَأَبدَيتُ مَخفِيَّ الهُدى في ضَلالِهِ

وَأَبدَيتُ مَخفِيَّ الهُدى في ضَلالِهِ

وَأَذعَنَ بِالتَسليمِ لي كُلُّ مُسلِمِ

وَأَذعَنَ بِالتَسليمِ لي كُلُّ مُسلِمِ

And revealed the guidance concealed in his misguidance,

And revealed the hidden guidance in his misguidance

And every Muslim would have yielded to me in submission.

And every Muslim would have surrendered to me

وَمَن لِيَ عَن سُؤالٍ يُريدُ حَياتَهُ

وَمَن لِيَ عَن سُؤالٍ يُريدُ حَياتَهُ

بِدَعوَةِ ظَنٍّ في مَقامِ التَفَهُّمِ

بِدَعوَةِ ظَنٍّ في مَقامِ التَفَهُّمِ

And who will shield me from a question that seeks his life,

And who dares to ask me about an inquiry at the risk of his life

Through an invocation of conjecture in the station of understanding?

With a pretentious call in the position of understanding
