وَأَحوىand a dark-lipped one قَدindeed حَوىhas captured مُهجَhearts البَراياcreatures
كَماjust as اِحتَوَتenclosed الضُلوعُthe ribs عَلىaround الحِواياthe entrails
And a dark-lipped one has captured creation's hearts,
And he who yearned has yearned for the wilderness of the desert,
As ribs enclose the entrails.
As ribs have encompassed passionate love.
غَزالٌa gazelle فاتِكُdeadly الأَلحاظِglances أَمسَتhave become
قُلوبُthe hearts العاشِقينَof lovers لَهُhis سَباياcaptives
A gazelle with deadly glances—now
A gazelle with alluring glances has,
The hearts of lovers are his captives.
The hearts of lovers become captivated by him.
غَنِيٌّrich بِالجَمالِin beauty فَلاso not يُضاهيis matched
وَيَبخَلُand he is stingy بِالطَفيفِwith the slightest مِنَof العَطاياgifts
Rich in beauty, he is beyond compare,
Rich in beauty, none can equal him
Yet he begrudges the slightest of gifts.
Yet stingy in giving little gifts.
إِذاwhen ساوَمتَهُI bargain with him وَصلاًunion بِروحيwith my soul
يَقولُhe says وَهَلand are there بِقِيَleft فيهاin it بَقاياany remnants
When I bargain with him for union, offering my soul,
If you bargain with him to trade my soul,
He says, "But is there anything left in it?"
He would say, “Does any of it still remain?”
جَنىhe wronged تيهاout of pride فَغادَرَso he left فيin جُنونيmy madness
عَلَيهِfor him صَبابَةِardent longing مِثلَlike الحَناياbows
He wronged me in his pride, leaving me mad
He reaped my craze and left in my madness,
With longing for him, bent like bows.
Burdens upon him like necklaces.
وَحَمَّلَنيand he burdened me العَشِيَّةَthat evening مِنfrom نَواهُhis parting
جَوِيٌّburning heartache بِأَقَلِّهِunder the least of it تَعِيّاgrow weary المَطاياthe mounts
And that evening, through his parting, he burdened me with
And he saddled me in the evening time with his charm,
A heartache whose slightest weight would weary mounts.
A lover even with the slightest of his glances detects the destinations.
وَلَولاand were it not for ثَغرُهُhis mouth ماnot شِمتَyou watched بِرقاًlightning
وَلاnor طُوِيَتwere folded عَلىupon الحُزنِsorrow الطَواياthe heart's inner folds
But for his mouth, you would never have watched lightning,
And if not for his mouth, you would not have glimpsed a lightning bolt,
Nor would the heart's folds have closed upon sorrow.
Nor folded over sorrowful yearnings.
وَماand not بَرقُlightning الثَنِيَّةِthe mountain pass هاجَstirred وَجديmy longing
وَلَكِنbut هاجَهُstirred it بَرقُlightning الثَناياthe front teeth
It was not lightning over the mountain pass that stirred my longing,
And the lightning bolt of commendation did not stir nor did my fervor,
But the lightning of his front teeth stirred it.
But his lightning bolt of intimacy did stir them.
