An illness settled in a heart worn thin by sickness.

O my ordeal, born of worry and misery.

Within my ribs is a flame whose heat sears

The soul’s dwelling place in the body with wasting pain.

On the day of parting, pain for him remained in my heart.

Oh, my burning and my ruin as I kept watch for him.

My anguish comes from a passion whose sparks flared up.

Amid my suffering, even an envious person pitied me.

Passion has clothed me; longing for him has left nothing

Of my soul, for a gazelle unequaled in beauty.

The face of one whose freshness glows follows me,

My wayward beloved, leaving me longing for all time.

A smiling beauty like the full moon has broken my strength,

Tempting me and weakening my endurance at parting.

    إِذا رَنا ساطِعُ الأَنوارِ في البَلَدِ

    The one bidding me farewell is a moon whose gesture captivates;

When he gazes, he shines with light throughout the land.

The one who gave me anguish delights in abandonment and revenge.

What can I do? He has seared my heart and liver.

Bent on my downfall, he is an aggressor whose bitterness tastes sweet.

O my people, take my hand toward wasting away.

My heart was seared; what is with you, seeking judgment through beauty?

In my anguish, he is my desire and my support.

The one who frightens me has gone; may his visit never be far away

When my killer turns away deliberately, without retribution.
