تَفاءَلتُI sought a good omen لِلمَولودِfor the newborn فيin بَطنِthe interior of مُصحَفٍa copy of the Qur'an
تَفاءَلتُ لِلمَولودِ في بَطنِ مُصحَفٍ
فَبَشِّرso it gave glad tidings باِبنٍof a son قادِمٍto come اِسمُهُhis name يَحيىYahya
فَبَشِّر باِبنٍ قادِمٍ اِسمُهُ يَحيى
Within a muṣḥaf I sought a favorable omen for the newborn;
I sought a good omen for the newborn within a copy of the Qur'an,
and it gave me glad tidings of a coming son whose name is Yaḥyā.
And it gave glad tidings of a son to come, whose name is Yahya.
فَأًصدِقso how truthful بِهِit is مِنas مُخبِرٍan informant وَمُبَشّرٍand a bearer of glad tidings
فَأًصدِق بِهِ مِن مُخبِرٍ وَمُبَشّرٍ
وَأَحرَand how fitting بِأَنthat أُسمّيهِI name him يَحيىYahya لِكَيso that يَحياhe may live
وَأَحرَ بِأَن أُسمّيهِ يَحيى لِكَي يَحيا
How truthful a teller and bearer of glad tidings it is!
How truthful it is, then, as an informant and bearer of glad tidings!
How fitting that I should name him Yaḥyā, so that he may live!
And how fitting that I should name him Yahya, so that he may live.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَرجُوdo hope اللَهَGod يُسعِدُwill bless جَدّهhis fortune
وَإِنّي لَأَرجُو اللَهَ يُسعِدُ جَدّه
فَيَحظَىso he may be favored بِفَوزٍwith success فيin المَماتِdeath وَفيand in المَحياlife
فَيَحظَى بِفَوزٍ في المَماتِ وَفي المَحيا
Indeed, I hope that God will bless his lot,
And I do indeed hope that God will bless his fortune,
that he may attain success in death and in life,
So he may enjoy success in death and in life,
وَيُكسىand he may be clothed رِداءَthe mantle العِلمِof knowledge وَالحِلمand forbearance وَالتُقىand piety
وَيُكسى رِداءَ العِلمِ وَالحِلم وَالتُقى
فَيُدرِكso he may attain عُقبىthe final reward مَنof whoever تَعفّفَpracticed self-restraint وَاِستَحياand showed modesty
فَيُدرِك عُقبى مَن تَعفّفَ وَاِستَحيا
and be clothed in the mantle of knowledge, forbearance, and piety,
And be clothed in the mantle of knowledge, forbearance, and piety,
thus attaining the good end of one who is chaste and modest.
Thus attaining the final reward of those who practiced self-restraint and showed modesty.
وَممّاand among what يَقوّيstrengthens فيهِconcerning him ظَنّيَmy expectation أَنَّهُthat he
وَممّا يَقوّي فيهِ ظَنّيَ أَنَّهُ
سَمِيُّthe namesake of نَبيٍّa prophet مُرسَلٍsent forth شافَهُspoke face to face with الوَحياrevelation
سَمِيُّ نَبيٍّ مُرسَلٍ شافَهُ الوَحيا
And what further strengthens my good expectation of him is that he is
And among what strengthens my expectation for him is that he is
the namesake of a messenger-prophet who communed directly with Revelation.
The namesake of a prophet sent forth, who spoke face to face with revelation.
