رُبَّmany an جَنينٍembryo مِنfrom جَنىthe fruit of النَميرِsweet, pure water
مُهَتّكِlaying bare الأَسرارِsecrets وَالضَميرِand innermost thoughts
Many an embryo from the fruit of sweet water,
Many an embryo was picked from the garden of flowers
Laying bare secrets and innermost thoughts,
With secrets and conscience torn asunder
سَللتُهُI drew it out مَنfrom رَحِمِthe womb of الغَديرِthe pool
كَأَنَّهاas though they were صَفائِحُsheets البلّورِcrystal
I drew from the womb of the pool.
I drew it from the womb of bounty
As though they were sheets of crystal,
As if it were translucent crystal
أَوor قِطَعٌpieces مِنof خالِصِpure الكافورِcamphor
لَوif بَقِيَتthey remained سِلكاًa strand عَلىthrough الدُهورِthe ages
Or pieces of pure camphor.
Or pieces of pure camphor
If they remained a strand through the ages,
Had it remained intact through the ages
لَعَطَّلَتthey would render needless قَلائِدَnecklaces النُحورِthroats
وَأَخجَلَتand would put to shame جَواهِرَjewels البُحورِthe seas
They would make necklaces on throats needless,
It would have adorned necklaces
And put the jewels of the seas to shame,
And humbled the jewels of the seas
وَسُمِّيَتand would be called ضَرائِرrival co-wives الثُغورِteeth

And be called the teeth's rival wives.
And been called the brooches of strongholds
Oh, how lovely it is in the season of scorching heat,
Oh its beauty in the time of ruin
إِذwhen قَيظُهُits summer heat مِثلُlike حَشاthe heart of المَهجورِthe forsaken one

When its summer heat is like the heart of one forsaken!
When its torment is like the deserted wilderness
It brings to livers and breasts
It evokes in hearts and breasts

وَيَجلِبُand brings السُرورَjoy لِلمَقرورِto the chilled person
A reviving breath like the sigh of one with an ailing chest,
A spirit that rivals the blowing wind
And brings joy to the chilled.
And brings happiness to the wretched
