وَلَماand when تَتابَعَcame in succession صَرفُthe vicissitudes الزَمانِof time
وَلَما تَتابَعَ صَرفُ الزَمانِ
فَزِعناwe sought refuge اِلىto سَيّدٍa lord نابِهِillustrious
فَزِعنا اِلى سَيّدٍ نابِهِ
And when the vicissitudes of time came in succession,
When the course of time brought changes,
we sought refuge with an illustrious lord.
We sought refuge in a mighty lord,
إِذاwhenever كَشّرَbared its teeth الدَهرُtime عَنrevealing نابِهِits fang
إِذا كَشّرَ الدَهرُ عَن نابِهِ
كَشَفناwe drove away الحَوادِثَthe calamities عنّاfrom us بِهِthrough him
كَشَفنا الحَوادِثَ عنّا بِهِ
Whenever time bared its fang,
If fate bared its teeth against us,
through him we drove calamities away from us.
Through him we warded off calamities.
