Like the writing in the boy’s books, perfected

With his ink and set right by one of his pens—

    A pen, slanting like a dove’s beak,

Entrusted with preserving knowledge by its learned master.

It marks the letters whenever it wishes to form them,

To make them clear with dots from its tracings.

From a tuft of wool, the ink breathed out its soot,

Until the wool’s color changed with the ink’s soot.

It grows faint, so a barley-grain’s worth is snapped from its nose,

Like a fingernail paring from its trimmer.

    سُقي المِدادَ فَزادَ في تَلامِهِ

    And in its nose a slit fitted together and ran straight;

It was given ink to drink, which increased in its groove.

    Mute, yet eloquent in everything

The tongue has uttered, despite its muteness.

And it has interpreters with tongues, who have

A clear explanation of what they recite from its rendering.

Whatever its scribes have written with it,

It never divulges when asked to keep it secret.

And its spelling is qāf and lām, followed by

A mīm suspended at the bottom of its lām.

The little gazelle said to her neighbor when she saw

Al-Muqannaʿ’s face from behind his veil:

    فَالعَينُ تُنكِرُهُ مِن أِدهيمامِهِ

    He had been fair-skinned, but a dusky hue came over him;

So the eye fails to recognize him for how dark he has grown.

How many a Mahri she-camel in her first mature year,

Free-striding in her forelegs, and a he-camel in his first mature year,

Has al-Walīd given, with her saddle and her rein,

And likewise that one, with his saddle and his rein!
