أَدارَO abode of النَوىseparation كَمhow often دارَcircled فيكwithin you تَلَدُّديmy bewildered wandering
وَكَمand how often عُقتِنيyou hindered me عَنfrom دارِthe home of أهيَفَa slender-waisted one أَغيدِsupple and graceful
O abode of separation, how often I have wandered bewildered within you!
How the planets have circled, how much they wavered in you,
And how often you have kept me from a slender-waisted, graceful beloved's home!
And how much they prevented me from the abode of my loved ones.
حَلَفتُI swore بِهِby him لَوif قَدindeed تَعَرَّضَinterposed دونَهُbefore him
كُماةُchampions الأَعاديthe enemies فيin النَسيجthe woven mesh المُسردِinterlinked
I swore by him: had the way to him been barred by
I swore by it, if the enemies had stood in its way
The enemies' champions in woven, interlinked mail,
Like the lined up stars in the outspread sky.
I would surely have unsheathed لِلضَربِto strike المُهَنَّدَthe Indian-steel sword فاِنقَضىand so was fulfilled
مُراديmy desire وَعَزand rare is ماanything مِثلَlike حَدّthe edge of المُهَنَّدِthe Indian-steel sword
I would have unsheathed the Indian blade to strike, and so fulfilled
I would have bared myself for the slashing sword, until
My desire—and rare indeed is the equal of the Indian blade's edge.
My purpose was fulfilled, and rare is one like the slashing sword.
فَماfor no حَلَّoccupied خِلٌّa beloved مِنwithin فُؤادِthe heart of خَليلِهhis lover
مَحَلَّthe place of اِعتِمادٍI'timad مِنwithin فُؤادِthe heart of مُحَمَّدِMuhammad
For no beloved has ever held within his lover's heart
So no heart of a friend is emptied of his friend's heart,
The place I'timad holds within Muhammad's heart.
A place of reliance, from the heart of Muhammad.
وَلَكِنَّهاbut it is الأَقدارُfate's decrees تُرديit slays بِلاwithout ظُبىsword edges
وَتُصميand it strikes mortally بِلاwithout قَتلkilling وَتَرميand it shoots بِلاwithout يَدِa hand
Yet such is fate: it slays without sword edges,
But it is fate that ruins without folly,
And strikes mortally without killing, and shoots without a hand.
And it deafens without killing, and casts without a hand.
