رَعىmay protect اللَهُGod مَنthe one يَصلىburns in فُؤاديmy heart بِحُبِّهِthrough love for him
سَعيراًa blazing fire وَعَينيand my eye مِنهُthrough him فيin جَنَّةِthe Paradise of الخُلدِeternity
May God guard the one for whose love my heart burns
in a blazing fire, while through that beloved my eye dwells in eternal Paradise.
غَزاليَّةُgazelle-like العَينَينِthe two eyes شَمسيَّةُsunlike السَناradiance
كَثيبيَّةُsand-dune-like الرِدفَينِthe two buttocks غُصنيَّةُbranch-like القَدِّthe figure
Gazelle-like in her eyes, sunlike in her radiance,
dune-like in her hips, branch-like in her figure.
شَكَوتُI complained إِلَيهاto her حُبَّهاlove for her بِمَدامِعيwith my tears
وَأَعلَمتُهاand I told her ماwhat قَدalready لَقيتُI had suffered مِنَof الوَجدِlove's anguish
I complained to her of my love for her through my tears,
and told her what anguish of love I had endured.
فَصادَفَthen encountered قَلبيmy heart قَلبَهاher heart وَهوَwhile it was سالِمٌunscathed
فَأَعدىso it infected وَذوand one with الشَوقِlonging المُبرِّحِtormenting قَدmay يُعديinfect others
Then my heart met hers, which was still unscathed,
and infected it; one with tormenting longing may infect another.
فَجادَتso she bestowed وَماand not كادَتshe almost did عَليَّupon me بِخَدِّهاwith her cheek
وَقَدand sometimes يَنبَعُsprings forth الماءُwater النَميرُpure and sweet مِنَfrom الصَلدِhard rock
So she granted me her cheek, though she scarcely did so;
and pure, sweet water may spring from hard rock.
فَقُلتُthen I said لَهاto her هاتيgive me ثَناياكِyour front teeth إِنَّنيindeed I
أُفَضِّلُI prefer نُوّارَblossoms الأَقاحيdaisies عَلىover الوَردِroses
Then I said to her, "Offer me your front teeth, for I
prefer daisy blossoms to roses.
وَميليand lean عَلىagainst جِسميmy body بِجِسمِكِwith your body فاِنثَنَتso she bent
تُعيدُshe repeats الَّذيwhat أَمَّلتُI had hoped for مِنهاfrom her كَماjust as تُبديshe offers
And lean your body against mine." So she bent,
giving and giving again what I had hoped from her:
عِناقاًembracing وَلَثماًand kissing أَروياboth quenched الشَوقَthe longing بَينَناbetween us
فُرادىsingly وَمَثنىand in pairs كالشَرارِlike sparks مِنَfrom الزَندِthe firestick
embraces and kisses that quenched the longing between us,
singly and in pairs, like sparks from a firestick.
فَياthen, O ساعَةًan hour ماhow كانَwas أَقصَرَshort وَقتهاits duration
لَدَيَّfor me تَقَضَّتit passed غَيرَnot مَندومَةِregretted العَهدِthe remembrance
Oh, what an hour! How brief its span was
for me! It passed, its memory free of regret.
