رَعىmay guard اللَهُGod حالَيناour two states حَديثاpresent وَماضياand past
وَإِنand though كُنتُI was قَدalready جَرَّدتُI unsheathed عَزميَmy resolve ماضياkeen-edged
May God guard our two states, the present and the past.
May Allah watch over my present and past state
And though I have unsheathed my keen-edged resolve,
Even if I have stripped my past resolve
فَماthen why لِلَّياليwith the nights لاnot تَزالُthey cease تَرومُنيthey seek me
وَيَرمينَand they shoot مِنّيfrom me صائِبَsure-striking السَهمِthe arrow قاضياdeadly
Why do the nights keep seeking me out,
Yet why do the nights not cease to persecute me
And shoot at me a sure-striking, deadly arrow?
And strike me with piercing arrows, to my ruin
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَتthey have known أَنَّthat الخُطوبَcalamities تَطوعُنيobey me
وَماand not زِلتُI have ceased مِنof لِبسِwearing الدَنياتِbase deeds عارياbare
Yet they know that calamities obey me,
And they know that misfortunes subdue me
And I have never worn the garb of baseness.
Yet I have not ceased to be bare of worldly garb
أُجَدِّدُI renew فيin الدُنياthe world ثياباًgarments جَديدَةًnew
يُجَدِّدُrenews مِنهاof them الجودُgenerosity ماwhatever كانَwas بالياworn out
I renew my garments afresh in this world;
I don new clothes in the world
Generosity renews whatever of them was worn out.
From which generosity renews what was worn
فَماfor no مَرَّpassed ليfor me بُخلٌstinginess بِخاطِرِthrough the thoughts of مُهجَتيmy heart
وَلاand no مَرَّpassed بُخلُstinginess of الناسِthe people قَطُّever بِبالياthrough my mind
For no stinginess has ever crossed the thoughts of my heart,
Yet neither miserliness has ever passed my mind
Nor has people's stinginess ever crossed my mind.
Nor people's miserliness ever crossed my mind
أَلاah حَبَّذاhow fine فيin المَجدِglory اِتلافُsquandering طارِفيmy newly acquired wealth
وَبَذليَand my giving عِندَat الحَمدِpraise نَفسيmy life وَمالياand my wealth
Ah, how fine to squander my newly acquired wealth for glory,
Oh, how excellent in glory is my unity with a gentle companion
And to give my life and my wealth for praise.
And my sacrificing, in praise, my soul and wealth
