أَتَعلَمdo you know أَنَّthat قَلبيmy heart غَيرُnot صاحِsober
وَأَنّيand that I مِنfrom سُلوِّكَforgetting you فيin اِنتِزاحِremoteness
Do you know that my heart is not sober,
Do you know that my heart is not well
and that I am far from forgetting you?
And that I am disturbed by your behavior
وَكنتُand I used to الدَهرَalways أَصطادُhunt المَعاليlofty honors
فَقَدso indeed أَصبَحتُI have become مِنamong صيدِthe prey المِلاحِthe beauties
I once spent my days hunting lofty honors,
I used to hunt glory all my life
but now I have become the prey of beauties.
But now I have become the prey of jesters
تُسَقِّينيshe gives me to drink البَخيلَةُthe stingy woman كَأسَa cup صَدٍّrejection
وَتَمزُجهاand she mixes it لِتَعليليto soothe me بِراحِwith wine
The stingy woman gives me a cup of rejection,
The miserly one gives me a cup of aloofness
and mixes it with wine to soothe me.
And mixes it to justify my relief
وَلَوand if شاءَتshe wished حَياتيmy life الدَهرَforever سَقَّتshe would have quenched
حَرورَheat القَلبِthe heart مِنfrom شَبَمcold water قُراحِpure
Had she wished me life forever, she would have quenched
If my life willed, it would have quenched
the heat of my heart with cold, pure water.
The heat of the heart from the embers of wounds
وَكانَتand would have been تَصنَعُdoing الحُسنىthe fairest one جَميلاًa kindness
وَلَكِنbut لَيسَnot تَلقىshe encounters غَيرَother than لاحِa reproacher
And the fairest would have done a kindness,
It would have made goodness beautiful
yet she encounters none but a reproacher.
But it does not find anything but negligence
فَسَقِّينيso give me to drink فَدَيتُكِmay I be your ransom مِنsome of عُقارٍwine
وَنادينيand call to me هَلُمَّcome إِلىto اِصطِباحِmorning wine-drinking
So pour me wine—may I be your ransom—
So give me an antidote, my dear
and call to me: 'Come to the morning draught!'
And call me, come to conciliation
