وَلَيلٍ أَدَمنا فيهِ شُربَ مَدامَةٍ

وَلَيلٍ أَدَمنا فيهِ شُربَ مَدامَةٍ

إِلى أَن بَدا لِلصُبحِ في اللَيلِ تأثيرُ

إِلى أَن بَدا لِلصُبحِ في اللَيلِ تأثيرُ

And on a night we drank wine without cease,

A night we lingered, drinking wine

Until dawn's influence appeared in the night.

Till dawn began to pierce the dark.

وَجاءَت نُجومُ الصُبحِ تَضربُ في الدُجى

وَجاءَت نُجومُ الصُبحِ تَضربُ في الدُجى

فَوَلَّت نُجومُ اللَيلِ وَاللَيلِ مَقهورُ

فَوَلَّت نُجومُ اللَيلِ وَاللَيلِ مَقهورُ

And the stars of dawn came striking through the darkness,

Then came the morning stars, and struck

So the stars of night fled, and night was vanquished.

The gloom, and put the night to flight.

فَحُزنا مَنَ اللَذاتِ أَطيَبَ طيبِها

فَحُزنا مَنَ اللَذاتِ أَطيَبَ طيبِها

وَلَم يَعدنا هَمٌّ وَلا عاقَ تَكديرُ

وَلَم يَعدنا هَمٌّ وَلا عاقَ تَكديرُ

So we gained from pleasures their sweetest delight,

And so we mourned the joys we’d lost,

And no care visited us, nor did vexation hinder us.

For no grief or regret remained

خَلا أَنَّهُ لَو طالَ دامَت مَسَرَّةٌ

خَلا أَنَّهُ لَو طالَ دامَت مَسَرَّةٌ

وَلَكِن لَيالي الوَصلِ فيهِنَّ تَقصيرُ

وَلَكِن لَيالي الوَصلِ فيهِنَّ تَقصيرُ

Save that, had it lasted longer, joy would have endured;

Except that when delight is long,

But nights of union are cut short.

The nights of union seem too short.
