An Aghmati woman sang melodies to you;
A songstress of Aghmat sang you melodies
they weighed heavily upon souls and bodies.
That weighed heavily upon souls and bodies.
قَدindeed كانَwas كالثُعبانlike a serpent رُمحُكَyour spear فيin الوَغىbattle
فَغَداthen it became عَلَيكَupon you القَيدُthe fetter كالثُعبانِlike a serpent
Your spear in battle had been like a serpent;
Your spear had been like a serpent in battle;
then the chain upon you became like a serpent—
Then the fetter upon you became like a serpent,
مُتَمَدّداًstretching out يَحميكَkeeps you from كُلّevery تعدّدٍmultiplicity (unclear in context)
مُتَعَطِّفاًcurling around لاnot رَحمَةًout of mercy لِلعانيfor the captive
the first outstretched, guarding you against every assault;
Outstretched, keeping you from all 'multiplicity',
the second curving round, with no mercy for the captive.
Curling around—not out of mercy for the captive.
قَلبيmy heart إِلىto الرَحمانِthe Most Merciful يَشكوcomplains of بَثَّهُits anguish
ماnot خابَwas disappointed مَنwhoever يَشكوcomplains إِلىto الرَحمانِthe Most Merciful
My heart complains of its anguish to the All-Merciful;
My heart complains of its anguish to the Most Merciful.
none who complains to the All-Merciful is disappointed.
No one who complains to the Most Merciful is disappointed.
ياO سائِلاًone who asks عَنabout شأنهِhis condition وَمَكانهِand his whereabouts
ماhow كانَwas أَغنىfree of need شأنَهُhis condition عَنof شانيmy condition
O you who ask about his state and his place,
O you who ask about his condition and his whereabouts,
how far his former state was from this state of mine!
How little his condition had need of mine!
هاتيكَthat over there قَينَتهُhis singing girl وَذَلِكَand that قصرُهُhis palace

Yonder is his singing-girl, and yonder his palace—
That is his singing girl, and that his palace,
after what palace chambers, what singing-girls!
After such private chambers and singing girls!

after every cherished Roman woman
After every cherished Roman woman
who imitated the doves high among the branches.
Who imitated the doves at the tips of branches.
