Your world is a mirror, with vicissitudes—

    varied and heaven-sent—and tidings.

Fie on it! Most of what is gained in it

by those who prosper is food and intercourse.

One who stayed prospered, while a traveler failed,

as though he were a chameleon in the midday heat.

    تَحارُ في كَونِها الأَلِبّاءُ

    Decrees never cease to arrive;

the wise are baffled by their occurrence.

The people's sons took their places,

and fathers were buried in the dust.

And the prince's glory vanished, and scattered

away from him were his courtiers and his loved ones.

And every moment brings sin and disobedience,

which some soul has added to its sins.
