خِصاؤُكَyour castration خَيرٌbetter مِنthan زَواجِكَyour marrying حُرَّةًa free woman
فَكَيفَhow then إِذاif أَصبَحتَyou become زَوجاًa husband لِمومِسِto a prostitute
Your castration is better than marrying a free woman;
What then, if you become a prostitute's husband?
وَإِنَّand indeed كِتابَthe document المَهرِthe dower فيماregarding what اِلتَمَستَهُyou sought it
نَظيرُthe counterpart of كِتابِthe letter الشاعِرِthe poet المُتَلَمِّسِal-Mutalammis
And indeed, the dower deed for what you have sought
is like the letter of the poet al-Mutalammis.
فَلاso do not تُشهِدَنَّever call to witness فيهِconcerning it الشُهودَthe witnesses وَأَلقِهِand throw it
إِلَيهِمto them وَعُدand return كَالعائِرِlike the wild ass المُتَشَمِّسِbasking in the sun
So never have witnesses attest it; throw it
to them, and return like a wild ass basking in the sun.
وَلُبسُكَand your wearing ثَوبَthe garment السَقمِsickness أَحسَنُfairer مَنظَراًin appearance
وَأَبهَجُand more pleasing مِنthan ثَوبِthe garment الغَويِّthe wayward man المُنَمِّسِthe deceiver
And your wearing the garment of sickness is fairer to behold
and more pleasing than the garment of the wayward deceiver.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you أَنif تَستَعمِلَyou employ العَقلَreason لاnot يَزَلcease
مَبيتُكَyour night's lodging فيin لَيلٍa night بِعَقلِكَby your reason مُشمِسِsunlit
And surely, if you employ reason, ever will
your lodging be in a night sunlit by your reason.
