وَأَتوا لَكُم بِالبِرِّ مَن آتاكُمُ
Your blind recited over your graves,
And brought pious deeds on your behalf to the One who gave to you.

فَبَغوهُ بِالفُرقانِ مِن مَوتاكُمُ
Your living begrudged them bounty,
So they sought it from your dead through the Qur’an.

How often you are admonished, yet your hearts do not soften!
So blessed be the Creator—how defiant you are!

You do not listen to admonishers in your summer,
And you shun righteousness in your winter.

Your middle-aged men and your youths take refuge in it.
