كُنتَ الفَقيرَ فَخُطِّئَت لَكَ صُيَّبُ

كُنتَ الفَقيرَ فَخُطِّئَت لَكَ صُيَّبُ

وَرُزِقتَ إِثراءً فَقيلَ مُقَرطِسُ

وَرُزِقتَ إِثراءً فَقيلَ مُقَرطِسُ

You were poor, so your hits were judged misses;

You were poor, so they blamed you

and you were granted wealth, so it was said, 'A marksman!'

And when you became wealthy, they called you a miser

خَرَصوا فَقالوا إِنَّ عالَمَ آدَمٍ

خَرَصوا فَقالوا إِنَّ عالَمَ آدَمٍ

قَد كانَ يَلفُظُ أَنفُساً إِذ يَعطِسُ

قَد كانَ يَلفُظُ أَنفُساً إِذ يَعطِسُ

They conjectured and said that Adam's world

They speculated and said that the human world

used to expel souls whenever it sneezed.

Used to sneeze out souls when it sneezed

فَلِذالِكَ صارَ الحَمدُ عِندَ عُطاسِهِم

فَلِذالِكَ صارَ الحَمدُ عِندَ عُطاسِهِم

خُلقاً لَهُم وَأَخو الحِجى مُتنَطِّسُ

خُلقاً لَهُم وَأَخو الحِجى مُتنَطِّسُ

Thus, praise whenever they sneezed became

So for that reason praise became for them, when they sneezed

their habit; yet the man of reason is discerning.
