Wine sought redress for the deeds of her drinker,

from the king, saying: “He gashed me, then killed me.”

And the cask’s assailant—his wounding was not

retribution for deliberate wrongdoing, but treachery against wine.

He wishes his darkness were a wine jar’s vapor,

and that every cloud poured down wine.

“What do you want from him? You have already overcome him.

Have you not seen him sprawled in the dust, cast down?”
