مَنwhoever رامَsought أَنto يُلزِمَcompel الأَشياءَthings واجِبَهاtheir duty
فَإِنَّهُthen indeed he بِبَقاءٍfrom continued life لَيسَdoes not يَنتَفِعُbenefit
Whoever seeks to compel things to fulfill their duty
will gain no benefit from living on.
أُرضيI satisfy اِنتِباهيmy wakefulness بِماwith what لَمdid not يَرضَهُaccept it حُلُميmy dream
قِدماًlong ago وَأَدفَعُand I push onward أَوقاتيmy hours فَتَندَفِعُso they move onward
I content my waking self with what my dream did not accept
long ago; I push my hours onward, and onward they go.
وَخَفَّand grew light بِالجَهلِthrough ignorance أَقوامٌsome people فَبَلِّغهُمso bring them
مَنازِلاًstations بِسَناءِin the splendor of العِزِّhonor تَلتَفِعُcloak themselves
And some people grew light through ignorance; so bring them
to stations cloaked in the splendor of honor.
أَماdid … not? رَأَيتَyou saw جِبالَthe mountains of الأَرضِthe earth لازِمَةًholding fast
قَرارَهاtheir resting place وَغُبارُwhile the dust of الأَرضِthe earth يَرتَفِعُrises
Have you not seen the earth’s mountains holding fast
to their resting place, while the earth’s dust rises?
